Gestational diabetes situation after birth ?

I had Gestational diabetes. My GD was totally diet managed, I don't want to rush out and eat rubbish but I was unable to eat potatoes etc. Now I've given birth should I be sticking with the strict diet or not? My doctor said to ask my visiting midwife but she was unsure too.

I do know I'll be tested at six week a glucose fasting test.

Theoretically, your blood sugar levels should have returned to normal post birth. Do you have a blood test kit. You could check levels on that.
