Friend has several times, when out with me , decides she'd doesnt like where we are , won't wait for a taxi ( or to be taken back in the car) storms off . Adamant she will get home on a bus by herself , " your treating me like a child " , asks passerbys by for directions.
This will be in an area unknown to her.
I think she must feel overwhelmed in unfamiliar settings and her anxiety makes her need to be back home.
She's very impatient and gets very angry if asked to wait before returning home.
I suppose there's nothing to be done other than never to take her somewhere unfamiliar.
Trying to reason with her escalates the situation and she becomes crosser and more fixed on making her own way home on her own.

Yeah, I think you’ll have to stop taking her to new places. Are familiar places OK?

My mum used to do this when she was feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes persuading her to sit down and eat a sweet snack seemed to help..

I would just meet her at home.

I think you're right about no more outings to unfamiliar areas.
Tricky when its a hospital visit .

Indeed! I remember my dad refusing to get out of the car at one doctor’s appointment.

It’s hard 💐

Unfortunately not eating and having a horror of snacks taken in-between the largely non existent meals means that she is often hungry and presumably frequently affected by low blood sugar.

Thank you @HeddaGarbled .
I know, in my head , that this must be a common problem but it's very comforting to hear of others with the same problems

That sounds really stressful, especially when she is in an unfamiliar place and suddenly decides she must get herself home. I think you’re right that reasoning with her in that moment probably won’t work and may only make her feel more trapped.
I’d keep outings short, familiar and very low-pressure, with a clear exit plan before you go. I saw RightCareHome talk about how activities and outings for people with dementia need to be adapted to the person, not just offered as normal trips. That really fits here: https://www.rightcarehome.co.uk/blog/care-home-activities-quality-guide
