Opening a bank account for DF

Can anyone advise if it is possible for me to open a new bank account in my DF’s name but without him present? I have LPOA for finance and health. I would like to open a new savings account for him but he is housebound. He does already have a bank account but I’d like to open a separate savings account in his name.

Thanks!

If you have POA I can't see why not.

It was some 5 years ago when I did this. The Bank advised it to be styled ‘my name, POA for my mums name.’ This was to avoid any misunderstanding or tax implications.

I found AGEUK an excellent source of information for all sort of things. It is worth a call to them.

Yes you can. You can do anything as if you were him. I have opened both bank and building society accounts in my father's name. That is, provided a) he has lost capacity to deal with his financial affairs or b) if the PoA was written in such a way that it cold take effect while he still has capacity. If he is still operating a bank account then you're looking at b)

My solicitor advised me that it's best to operate in only once mode if each financial institution, ie don't have one bank account which he operates himself and another with the same bank which you operate as attorney. Set up the second account with a different institution. You'll need to present the usual id for yourself along with the PoA document.
