Dementia, cancer and more

Not sure what I'm asking for, just looking to have a mental dump.

MIL passed away just over a year ago after longstanding health issues. Realised how much she had supported/covered up Fils behavior. FIL currently sectioned, moved to a stage 3. Recently diagnosed with cancer in three areas, non treatable. Dementia diagnosis around 18 months ago. FIL also has long standing mental health issues, depression and anxiety mainly.

FIL looking to be released probably into care home next month. My DH and his sister and her partner have attended meetings and providing support. Cancer prognosis gives him months over years.

We are visiting weekly and he is declining quickly, don't think he initially recognised us on the last visit. Took photos in and not sure if this made things worse, quite upset and didn't recognise MIL on a photograph at first.

We will visit again over Xmas and New Year, he will remain in the unit. Any advise on presents for him or just anything we can do to help support him?

I would say something nice to eat if anything at all, go with the flow and let him lead the conversation. Make sure the staff are looking out for him and he is comfortable and has as much quality of life as is possible. A little later on make sure his end of life care is well planned.

Would audio books help him as the right one can be a reassuring presence
