Stupid question perhaps - does anyone have a lamens terms explanation of the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s?

Am I right that Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia?

How is it different to others?

Dads been recently diagnosed. Not sure what to do.

I think dementia is a symptom, Alzheimer’s is a disease.

Sorry to hear about your dad. I’m on this journey with mum. We have had some very difficult times but some good ones too.

Hi my mum has mixed dementia - which is vascular dementia and Alzheimer's. Agree with PP - Dementia is the umbrella term for a range of illnesses. Have a look at the NHS website it's very good at explaining the differences it really helped me.

Very sorry to hear about your dad Flowers

I've always understood it as Dementia being the umbrella term as PP have said and Alzheimer's is more specific in the same way that Cancer is the umbrella and leukaemia is the more specific.

Dementia is an umbrella term which covers something like 120 different types of dementia - Alzheimer's is one of the main types of dementia
