Dirty bedsit

Hi all, just moved in and it's really dirty. The landlord said was professionally cleaned which was bullshit. Here is a list of problems;

  1. Old and brown poison mouse trap behind oven with mouse droppings running along the back bottom of kitchen wall
  1. Oven glass completely brown and old greasy food stuck to it on inside
  1. Extraction fan filter completely brown.
  1. Shower full of limescale
  1. Food crumbs over surfaces and of bits of food lying around.
  1. The room has a musty cat litter smell
  1. New mattress has stains.

I just plugged in a fabreeze scent thingy to try and mask the smell

This is normal when renting? I was living with family for the last 2 years and previously the family home.

If the deposit is in the scheme, and there's no checkin, then you are pretty much guaranteed that deposit back - they can't prove the move-in state of the flat without one, so they can't claim any money for damage (and the schemes are sticklers for that).

Highly dodgy, and they'll definitely try to screw you over, but just go straight to the deposit protection people.

@MuyBien
thats positive news hopefully they have given you the DPS login details and your reference number ? they have a really good website for both tenant/landlord.
good tip, (ive been through this myself) set up your account / password with the DPS so that when the time comes and the letting agent decides to pick holes in the inventory (Im being cynical but it could happen) you have your facts to hand and keep all the photos/videos and emails as evidence of the condition of the property you moved in and that you made every attempt to get a good service at that point. It would be quite annoying if you lost the evidence. Also did you photograph the meter readings, that’s also important.
anyway, it sounds like it’s working out for you and I wish you every happiness in your new ‘pad’
Come back on if you get any more problems lots of brilliant helpers here 😀

Here is a video walkthrough I took on the 16th of July but I moved in on the 8th. The letting agent never turned up after complaining so I had to clean it myself.

Take pictures of everything before you clean and send them to the landlord and agency.

TwoMonthsOff · 20/07/2022 15:26

Not been through whole video but seriously that oven needs to be replaced
it’s a health hazard.
as advised earlier can you get a worktop one it will be your own then and you will feel safe preparing your meals In it
it saddens me that people think that’s acceptable

vaingina · 20/07/2022 16:57

That kitchen is grim and hasn’t been cleaned for years. It should be replaced with new, clear tops and appliances.
It is over 30 odd years ago that I rented, but I didn’t know that these sorts of rentals still existed.
you have included lots of personal info on this post. Are you happy with that?

Hi, do you mean my face is visible on the video?

I mean I watched the video in Dropbox and at the end you speak on it- can be seen. Haven’t you also given the name of the estate agents? This is an anonymous forum where people tend to guard their privacy. I wondered if you knew how it worked. You haven’t done anything wrong- whoever rented you this pit has, but even so you might not want to be identifiable?

TwoMonthsOff · 20/07/2022 22:15

@MuyBien @vaingina

is it allowable to ‘name and shame’ here as I think this letting agent should be accountable …
appreciate your concern for OP privacy, thanks
