Why do some men drive practically lying horizontal and so far back?

I've just driven a friends car - he's only about an inch taller than me but I have much longer legs. The car seat was so reclined I could hardly see out and even with my longer legs I had to really stretch to fully depress the pedals.

I've known several men that drive in this peculiar driving position - but none of my girlfriends do.

What's it all about eh?

It's kind of the opposite for us.

I do sit a lot further back beacuse i am a lot taller - but i like the seat to be very high and the steering wheel very low like i am driving a truck. I feel as if i can see a lot more the higher i am.

She, on the other hand, has the seat all the way down to the floor so when i get in the car after her i literally fall in the car and feel like i have gone through the floor and am sitting on the driveway.

Everyone has their own position.

I would really like one of these cars with the memory seats that weigh you when you sit in them and moves the seat postion and mirrors to your own settings.

Sat in a Merc once that had this and it freaked me out when everything started moving by itself.

Good idea but a very expensive optional extra. We had it as an option for our current car but we went for the sat nav and leather seats instead.

I have often wondered this.

Those men who drive leaning back, one hand on the wheel and doing their best to look so cool and as if driving is really something they can do with their eyes shut, and yes, they may be undertaking in a bus lane at twice the legal speed limit, but really, babes, it's no great sweat, is it......

DP and I are the opposite.

I drive with the seat all the way back (I drive an Astra) but if he ever drive my car he has to move the seat forward, I feel like I've got my knees round my ears if I get in without re-adjusting the seat after him!

Wouldn't be so noticeable if it wasn't for the fact he's a generous 6'3 and I just about make 5'8 on a good day

The reason some of us sit so far back is we have long arms and if you have an orang utan's shape there's not much else you can do!

It's worse to sit too close as if the airbag goes off there is a much higher chance of more injuries. I think the advice is to sit at least a foot away. I'm 5ft 3 but sit as far back as dh does and he's 5ft 8. Why do some women sit bolt upright and so close to the wheel?

lol discoverlife..edinburgh tattoo norks horns...

dh is laid back, relaxed not though not horizontal
me much more upright and nervy
hate driving

useful to be close to the windscreen though
the other driver saw the gear knob in my hand again and reversed..thank you kind man...

was born to be driven, thats what i say
and dh happy driver so its jack sprat n all that

Its very simple - its sad attempts to look cool. Ways my fellow men make themselves look like utter cocks instead of coool:

  1. Seat reclined a long way back, one hand on top of wheel. Looks good for gangsta rappers, less good when you're in a repmobile and no longer have control of the car.
  2. Sidelights and Fog Lights combo. Practiced by saddos in barried-up Saxos and BMW X5s.
  3. Driving 2" off the car in front doing 90mph down the motorway. More comical when everyone in lane 3 does the same thing and at some point when brake light bingo starts one of them will get house and end up crashing.
