Why do men go near them?

Just reading about another nasty incident involving a prostitute and reading about the seedy, desparate and drug-addled world they inhabit.

I just don't understand why anyone would want to be in the same room as these girls, let alone get intimate with them. They always look so horribly unhealthy and out of it.

I just can't fathom why anyone would be so damn desparate for a lumber that they would get involved in these desparate peoples lives. I have heard that some guys get a kick out of the grubbiness and danger of it all - but i just can't see it myself.

I'm not wanting to discuss the reasons behind why the girls are having to do it because that's another huge and difficult issue in itself - just why the other side of the coin is driving this terrible industry.

Any thoughts?

And to answer your question-you know exactly why men do near them;-SEX. The question i'm more interested in is why you choose to post about prostitutes on mumsnet of all places!!!

VictorianSqualor · 03/06/2008 12:47

I know a group of young fit lads, who would be out on the pull most weekends, and always get laid (so not because of lack of sex) that would happily brag about paying £50 for two girls in a turkish bath, even though they were munters.

It was almost a hobby, kind of 'ah, nowt to do, bit bored, I'm going to pop down the parlour'

Don't know why though.

Pan · 03/06/2008 12:53

yaryar - yes, similar point to mine except with a little less restraint..

I am a little surprised this thread has lasted so long without further opprobium from other posters with it's massive lack of respect for prostitutes.

maybe as it's in Dadsnet it's thought, 'what can you expect'.

Tortington · 03/06/2008 12:55

this is why

BigGitDad · 03/06/2008 15:48

Daddy Cool, I know someone who did lose his virginity in Amsterdam to a prostitute in exactly the circumstances you decribed, only he had his wallet nicked at the same time and he did not realise until after he left the parlour! A lesson in that maybe!!

Its a huge power trip I think - intimate control over another person - however the problem is there is no shame in it now - a friend has been shagging his way round the world - he will happly boast at how cheap he got the cost down to. Now we are all guilty in the pub for not shunning him - did nothing that would suggest that it was wrong. By that a group of ten of us are maybe just as responsible in failing the women.

Oh and don't suggest don't be friends with him - I have know the guy since I was 11.

theBOD · 05/06/2008 19:00

as someone famous once said "you don't pay prostitutes for sex,you pay them to leave."

although i completely agree with the OP i can't see why anyone would do it. firstly i couldn't bring myself to pay for sex and would feel disgusted at myself. also the prostitutes you see walking the street over here are normally junkies so not the most appealling.

can't believe that in some groups there is no shame in it/people actually brag about it. one of my mates did it once 5/6 years ago and he's still ashamed of himself.

Flashman · 05/06/2008 19:28

Perhaps I just have very low mates - and no shame.

emskaboo · 05/06/2008 19:50

Men who use prostitutes are scum, end of. Women who are prostitutes are almost all survivors of sexual abuse, addicts or slaves ecominically or actually and men who perpetuate this kind of abuse on women by using sex workers have no shame. And don't, please, give me and of that fucking crap about women making a fre choice to sex work, sex workers aren't bloody Billie Piper in posh knickers you know. And before you ask yes I have worked with sex workers in a professional capacity, no I haven't been one/been with a man whose used them.

theBOD · 06/06/2008 12:08

i love that attitude. men who use prostitutes = scum ( iagree completely)
prostitutes = victims.
utter bullshit.

chipmonkey · 06/06/2008 13:49

But theBod, most sex workers are women who were sexually abused. It's a fact.

hmm just taking one issue that I would like to understand a little better smallwhitecat on the point those simply incapable of earning a living by anyother means what do they do if men stopped using sex workers?

chipmonkey · 06/06/2008 23:45

How would someone only be able to make a living from sex, though?

EricL · 07/06/2008 11:02

Yeah - they would have to get a real job in the normal world.

What a trauma that would be.

Just like the rest of us - shocking.

Paying tax, turning up on time, not being off your face, minding your manners and other tedious shit like that.

I wish.

I do support these inititives though that concentrate on getting the girls off the streets. Most of them must be so entrenched in the lifestyle because they failed to make the right decisions many years ago - that they would find it difficult to get back into a normal working life without someone shoving it in their face and doing it for them.

Came across two of them when i was walking home with my mates after a club the other weekend. We were just walking home through the city centre when these two manky and gobby tarts started making approaches and wanted to know if we wanted 'a good time'.

Quite why they would actually think going anywhere near them could be seen as having 'a good time' is beyond me.

By the way - why the hell is this topic still rumbling on?

It must be well old by now.

I'll just get myself into trouble for saying inappropriate and 'anti-PC' things again.

Auguist 07?

We MUST have better things to talk about now surely?...............

chipmonkey · 07/06/2008 15:59

Dunno, Eric, you seem to be talking to yourself, if you ask me!

madamez · 07/06/2008 16:02

I find this a bit unpleasant: sex workers are people. even the ones who are desperate, homeless junkies.
And when it comes to high-end sex workers (the girls who get £200-300 an hour) they are often on friendly terms with regular clients and regard the bulk of their clients as people, too.
I have never understood why sex for money at an hourly rate is so much worse than sex for board and lodging at a lifetime rate (ie marriage in many cases).

GustWriter · 09/06/2008 19:01

Can you give me the etemology of "lumber" please? I've not heard that one before.

But to answer your post I don't know, I'm not a man.

yaryar · 09/06/2008 21:30

I'd say that it's not about "being PC" Eric it's about basic human decency. Why are you so fascinated by them anyway? Seems a bit strange to me.

Triathlete · 16/06/2008 22:09

Wot emskaboo and smallwhitecat said.

A lot of men use prostitutes because they like the power and degrading women. It's not about the sex.

Clairwil · 22/04/2009 17:44
