'Smart Casual'

I hate this. i hate hate hate it. you're rather formal or casual - there is no in between.

I'm working a temporary contract and their dress is smart casual. you know, when they expect all the guys to wear naff golf shirts and pleated chinos everyday.

I don't do 'smart casual' so I had to rummage around in my father-in-law's wardrobe for golf shirts and cheesy slacks. he has plenty... he's 63.

does this get on anyone else's nerves?

I'm under the age of 50 and I don't have two stomach's (yet) so I just don't see the need to wear triple pleated slacks, which seem to be the main trouser of choice.

There aren't many people who can be SMART and casual at the same time. Trying to be smart is by implcation something that takes effort. Smart casual is like saying I'm really going to make an effort, but I'll be chilled about making that effort.

I used to work with a Guy who never ironed his shirts so when he was trying to be smart he looked a mess. His nickname was Rumpleshirtskin. However when he wore Jeans and a T Shirt he looked ok.

His boss took him aside one day and told him he had to smarten up which he took to mean no more jeans and T Shirt so he then started to look a mess every day. Funny thing was we had to visit the public on a regular basis.

Another day he came to work in the usual crumpled shirt but this time there was a huge hole in it. We all thought it looked like a bullet hole. You can imagine how shocked we were when he announced he burnt it ironing it. Was he just poking the iron at the shirt?

The words "Smart" and "Casual" go together like the words "socks" and "sandals"

yes. my brother is the king of smart casual. he wears socks with his sandals because he doesn't like bugs and grass round his feet. he has issues.

I connect with your brother, I wear a box round my head because I have issues with people. Tell him it works well. Also it is smart and casual at the same time, you just alter your swagger depending on circumstance.
