Poetry ideas needed for son's birthday poem

I don't know if anyone else does this, but once my children reach 10, I have started doing birthday poems for them. Ds1 is 12 on Saturday so this will be the third poem I have done for him and I am lacking original ideas.

When he was 10 I wrote a long poem of rhyming couplets, just silly stuff really about things that interest him.

When he was 11 I wrote an acrostic poem using his full name and recounting some of his achievements/hobbies for the year just gone.

I would really like suggestions for what I could do this year. He still has the same hobbies and interests as last year so I can't really revamp that idea. I like the acrostic idea as it limited my poem to a few short lines and it did not have to rhyme!

So, anyone with any ideas?

Limericks?

(When can you start doing haikus?)

DumbledoresGirl · 19/06/2008 20:12

LOL Haikus will be reserved for when they are teenage and never speak to me so give me nothing to write about!

Limericks - it is an idea but it will only be 5 lines long. I am not sure I can be clever enough to make it memorable!

I can't tell you his whole name - bloody hell you could trace hin down from his name! But his first name is Declan and last year this was the first verse of my poem: (don't take the piss)

Difficult though this is
Every parent should try to do it
Can I number your achievements
Leaving out no letters of your name?
A whizz at all things mathematical
Not a soul at school can match you.

So I have done an acrostic using his name. I suppose I could do another acrostic using the words Happy Birthday, but I was really hoping for another idea.

yeah what does deck of cards mean?
I think you should do a rap

Katisha · 19/06/2008 20:25

Deck of Cards
People have done parody versions...

DumbledoresGirl · 19/06/2008 20:26

How would a rap go? Just give me a flavour, it doesnt matter what it is about.

Erm it should probably start with Yo.

(Reaches end of usefulness here...)

DumbledoresGirl · 19/06/2008 20:30

LOL!

I like deck of cards idea. Would that go something like this?

Ace - you only have one mother so respect her!

Two - the number of times you have combed your hair without being asked this year.

Three - your siblings whom you love to attack so much

DumbledoresGirl · 19/06/2008 20:46

Yo this is the tale of a dude called Dec
Whose going at a speed that is called breakneck
Through childhood?s years, he ain?t no snail,
It?s enough to make his parents pale

Yo!

Dec of Cards...

DumbledoresGirl · 19/06/2008 21:07

Yeah, it was a good idea but I could not think of things to put with each number. I am trying the rap idea out.

The trouble we go to for our kids eh?
