I'm looking for somewhere to take DH for his 40th - he'd love a fantastic meal somewhere, a special one, so looking to find a restaurant (in London). Had wanted to go to Scott's but can't get a table. Has anyone been to Claridges or could anyone reccomend somewhere???? thanks

Well, the deed is done - I have an 8.45 table at Maze - which they need back at 1030 - but hey. Think he'll like it though (he loves the whole tasting plate thing and the fact that it isn't too stuffy is good). Thinking cocktails at the Dorchester before hand. Now just need to find a hotel...............anyone???

Excellent, I love Maze. The wine flight is a good option if you have the tasting menu. Hotels - Metropolitan is very cool, lovely views over Hyde Park and quite near the restaurant. Malmaison or The Zetter in Clerkenwell. What sort of thing do you want - modern or traditional?

Rules is great, very old fashioned in the right way,and quite cosy. The wolesley is lovely for tea, haven't eaten dinner there.St.John has wonderful food -but a very simple interior, not grand like Claridges.

i love cecconis, hakasaan is fab, why would you want to be there more than 2 hrs?, just walk down the road and go to the soho hotel for drinks after. most have 2hr policies now.
plus i always nick a lovely hand wash from hakasaan, lasts ages and smells lovely.

do you know anyone with a black american express? they can get you in anywhere, the ivy et al have a "tourist" telephone number and a real one that you can actually book a table on, its all hype.

you cant beat fino on charlotte st.
