Pompeii - what to see

Hello. I am visiting Pompeii tomorrow after a twenty year hiatus. I used to know it quite well but was never on top of its geography. I believe that it has changed with lots of new discoveries.

The thing I remember being difficult is how overwhelming the site is. I only have one day, if that- what do I target?

I wanted to come back and update anyone who was using this thread for reference. Children under 18 are free. When you get to the entrance gate they give you a free child’s ticket which can be used for the villas as well. We got tickets from here: https://www.ticketone.it/artist/scavi-pompei/parco-archeologico-di-pompei-ingresso-giornaliero-988882/ We got the circumvesuviana train from Naples Garibaldi. It was cheap and straightforward but very busy. I think in high season it might be worth paying extra for the Express train that runs along the same route with fewer stops and apparently has air conditioning or taking part in some kind of tour. What an amazing experience it was. We all really loved it.

It sounds as though I was ripped off on the children’s ticket @Curtainconundrum

So glad you had a good time.

All my family said it was their favourite part of the trip.

A small price to pay for such a brilliant trip though wasn't it! Did you book your tickets well in advance? I did see the option to pay 3euros or so for cancellation insurance so I wonder if that's what it was. We booked the day before so didn't need it.
I found the booking quite confusing- there are so many different sites selling tickets, then more doing tours, it was really hard to know what was what.
