My dd 9 is very talented musically and plays two instruments. I have thought about the academys for children which run on saturdays but need to know what its like, what is expected and how hard is it to get in.

I used to go to one years ago - had to audition through the county music service as they funded it. Not at all sure how it would run now. Royal College of Music Junior Dept. Others in London are Royal Academy of Music. Trinity College of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

The secretaries at the junior departments of the London conservatoires are generally very helpful and you could ring them for advice. Virtually all the kids @ JRAM seem to be music scholars at their respective weekday schools.
I don't know about wind instruments but for strings I'd say you'd have to have achieved ABRSM Grade 5 distinction by end of year 5( age 10) or at least be of that standard. Musicality and potential is taken very seriously and it certainly isn't all about paper qualifications, though.
