Hamilton

I need to gush...

Waited 5 years to see Hamilton. Just couldn't get tickets, too expensive, then COVID.

FINALLY got to see it last weekend. I cannot stop thinking about how brilliant it was. I'd listened to the soundtrack & knew it inside out but to see it live just blew me away (!)

On paper, it's just not my thing. Rap? Nah. US history? God, no. But, man alive...the reality; it's just unbelievably clever and well-crafted.

I just want to find Lin Manuel Miranda and shower him with my undying love and adoration. How can one person be so bloody clever?!!

Gush over. Thanks!!

What can I obsess over next?

Oh you sound just as obsessed with it as I am.
Hoping to see it in the summer.

MinglingFlamingo · 10/02/2022 22:35
@MinglingFlamingo it was pretty normal. Some people in masks, some not.
Ok great thanks! Smile

DinasCopUniform · 10/02/2022 22:57

I have watched it and/or listened to it EVERY SINGLE DAY since my 50th birthday in 2020. Not even embarrassed.
I went to see it in January, and it exceeded all of my expectations Grin

But it just made the obsession worse!

pinkhousesarebest · 12/02/2022 19:51

wine thank you!

takeabrake · 23/02/2022 09:31

I have a ticket going spare for Saturday night - it's the royal circle back row right on the end, if anyone here is able or willing to go alone...

takeabrake · 23/02/2022 09:33

Sorry, it's not Saturday night at all - it's the matinee at 2:30pm Blush

Saw Book of Mormon in Southampton yesterday. Haven't set foot in a theatre for 2 years and have missed it, there's nothing to compare to a live performance. It was worth waiting for. It's very acute, drags every stereotype out of the cupboard and kicks it round the set, excellent cast, great orchestration and choreography, no complaints at all. 5 stars for it. See it or risk going to Spooky Mormon Hell.

Gardeningcreature · 15/04/2022 14:38

Hi just found this thread. I'm going to see Book of Mormon very soon. Last thing I saw was Cluedo which was very good.

longwayoff · 15/04/2022 17:53

It's really vulgar - language, actions - but very sharp and funny. Be prepared if you shock easily but still go. Hope you enjoy it.

Penguinsaregreat · 23/04/2022 14:42

Hi, went to see Book of Mormon and it really is very close to the knuckle. It was excellent, great performances all round and very cleverly written.
Haven't seen Hamilton, well unless you count the televised version which was ok, might book if it tours near me.

leafinthewind · 23/04/2022 14:51

I love Hamilton but didn't love Mormon - I saw in it Southampton too. I couldn't see who it was taking aim at. Mormons? Americans? Westerners? Anyone who believes in god? Anyone who uses the beliefs of others to their own ends? And if it's that last lot, how the hell do you know who they are? If your satire is going to be that bitey, it should be better targeted. It felt very macho to me.

Six sounds promising. And I hope Suffs makes it over here (though it sounds more depressing than Hamilton).

rachelohrachel · 23/04/2022 15:01

Yay! I am taking my daughter for her birthday in June, can't wait! We have seats in the middle of front row of the Royal Circle, hoping for total immersion!

My daughter and I also went to see Six last month, agree on the modern history similarities!

Has everyone seen the film of the In The Heights musical - we LOVE this!

Kennykenkencat · 23/04/2022 15:10

Glad you enjoyed it. I Love the Book of Morman.

Not too sure but I am presuming they have changed the cast of Hamilton as when I saw it when it first came out in the West End it was let down by some dodgy castings which spoilt it.

I always thought it was the Mormons and religion in general particularly the do gooder evangelical types who have a certain view of Africa.

I loved the soundtrack and had listened to it a lot and seen youtube performances. enjoyed it at the theatre very much, but wasn’t blown away. The music was fantastic, but the dance choreography got samey, no chemistry between the leads (hamilton, eliza and angelica) and disliked an adult playing the child philip.

AgentProvocateur · 23/04/2022 15:37

I saw Hamilton a few years ago, and it’s STILL the best thing I’ve ever seen (closely followed by Les Mis). Like the OP, I’m not a huge fan of hip hop and I’m not that interested in American history, but I absolutely loved it.

Binkybix · 08/05/2022 15:42

He also wrote some of the Moana songs I believe, some of which are brilliant!

Comefromaway · 17/06/2022 09:58

Read Giles Tererra's book Hamilton and Me. (I was lucky enough to see him play Burr) Hamilton is phenomenal.

Book of Mormon is great, it's my son's complete obsession.

However the best show I have EVER seen (& I've seen a lot) is Come From Away. see it soon. It's closing on Broadway in the autumn and sadly the UK usually follows shortly afterwards so see it while you can.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 17/02/2023 23:06

Just seen Hamilton for the second time. Great again but not as good as original cast. Giles Terrera as Aaron Burr was superb the first time. Most importantly DD loved it - was her birthday present. Also seen Book of Mormon which was great too.
