Funiculi funicula. A song about trams? This is taking the mick surely???

Heard this in a concert recently. Have heard the tune many times without listening to the words and heard "funiculi funicula". I thought, that can't be right, I went on a funicular railway in Scarborough... Then found this

Well, two, I believe. I've known the tune for years but never listened closely to the words. So you're serious? Trams? Not exactly "I'm going to die of typhoid in this bohemian attic whilst the snow lays thick on the ground".
