Anthony Gormley at the Hayward Gallery

I went to see this yesterday - very impressive - loved the room full of steam and the figures all over the skyline. Anyone else been?

Not seen the exhibition itself, but I live nearby and see the skyline figures regularly. I hope to get to the exhibition itself soon.

I know a police officer who covers that area, and people keep phoning in a panic...."someone's on the roof, looks like they're going to jump!"

heard Jenny Eclair talking about it on LBC (I podcast for my London fix) and it sounds so great. What are the chances of it coming to Christchurch NZ d'you reckon

have a photo on my wall that I took of the big figures in water installation (cannot remember it's name offhand) that's now in Crosby (I think) from it's first incarnation in Stavangar, Norway. fabulous

mrs jc! sorry to create envy but think of the quality of life in NZ and then your envy will at once begone!

Also there's a video of the whole exhib on youtube plus the hayward gallery has a video too and some brilliant photos he's taken too.

Weirdly 'space station' made me feel really nauseous - I had to sit down outside because I thought I'd hurl! I'd read the bmph where AG said "blah blah space station might make you uncomfortable even nauseou" And I thought "Pah!" walked around and under this mad looking 800 ton leaning tower of Pisa Monster and was nearly ILL!!!!! I had to go outside and it reminded me of the horror of morning sickness!

There are loads of gormley films on youtube, not all of the same quality though!

bagsunder, I read that too! It is amazing to see them isn't it? They must be so strongly fixed mustn't they? Have you seen the ones on the pavement?

Yup, they're slightly sinister IMO. I prefer to watch from Waterloo bridge though, as I can see more of them at once.

Gormley has a studio near where I live, and has designed the bollards and lamposts for a local street. It makes that area quite striking.

I'm keen to go and see this. I had a look at the Hayward website but didn't understand about tickets. Did you have to book in advance for the exhibition? There was a long list of dates on the site that said Sold Out and I didn't know if that was just for part of it, or for the whole thing.

Go on a Monday as it is half price. £4 for adults then. I did not book in advance. Found the steam room terrifying and I don't have a problem with enclosed spaces. The whole exhibition was wonderful. A definite MUST SEE!

Ipa - I'm delighted you enjoyed the exhibition.

I would love to see this exhibition and am fascinated by the idea of the Space Station.

I love that Gormley makes art so accessible through his street sculpture.

We didn't book but turned up in the morning, had to queue for about 5 minutes or so but no problem getting in - but it was a week day mid morning, don't know how busy at the w/end.

Tnogu! I love the street sculpture too - there's something so accessible about Gormley despite his art making me sick!

Bagsunder -I love that AG designed local bollards - how very civilised to live there.

I live near Grayson Perry's studio - not quite as grand but it makes me happy! I did see him once on his enormous motorbike in leathers looking not at all like Alice in Wonderland.

Is it worth taking the dcs? They are 6, 4 and almost 2. They will like the figures on the roofs but is it worth taking them into the gallery?

I think it would be great for a 6 yr old - I'd love to take ds (6) but for the 4 and 2, it might be exhausting for you because you're not supposed to touch the exhibits really but they're so touchable for little ones. So I think they'd love it and it would be fascinating but potentially hugely hard work for parent with three! Tough call.

I'd love to see this Gormley in Winchester Cathedral in Winchester Cathedral

I went last weekend (had lovley lovely childfree w/end alone in London and did all manner of cultural things.)

I saw his installation (wanky word) on Crosby beach last winter and thought it was great too.

Steam room freaked me first of all but I wen back in and was brave enough to cross it.

moondog the steam room or "Blind Light" was full of really hysterically giggling teenage girls which made the whole thing funny, I'd like to see what it would be like in silence, that might really change the atmosphere. The laughter made it seem fun but I did feel quite nervous inside, nervous of someone being in my space any second.
It's so odd how people only become visible when they're literally on top of you isn't it?

Tnogu, like a lot of Gormley it's very funny but has the potential to be very upsetting as well I think.

A lot of his work has a slightly, 'disturbing' feel to it.

I like that aspect to be honest.

sorry rtk - I don't know about parking we walked from waterloo underground.
But if you look on Southbank or Hayward website they should have that info.

Yes Tnogu I like the unsettling side too, I've always liked quite dark art like Schiele and bleak/ weird expressionistic art.

btw the Tour de France goes past there next weekend so it will be extremely busy

I've seen the Field. It's great. I was several years ago in St Ives there was an exhibition of his work there. I was very struck by this one toobaby She was in a room by herself and was very beautiful. I would really like to see the new exhibition

what day are you going on RTKM?

If you go to the Southbank on a Sunday, you can park on the yellow line on Waterloo Bridge. If you do, I would recommend getting there early - i.e. 10/11ish because any later than that and it will be heaving.

If you are going during the week, there's a parking lot by the Eye and there is parking for the RFH/Hayward but I think you may need to phone up because I'm not sure there are many spaces.

Otherwise, I'd just head for a parking lot around there.
