On the Number 10 Downing Street website there is a petition up and running which aims to stop the Chancellor using Arts and Heritage Lottery money to plug the funding gap in the 2012 Olympics. The Chancellor proposes to plug the funding gap with a 35% reduction in Grants in Arts funding and reallocating the money to the Olympics. Please submit your name to the petition and oppose the cuts to Arts Grants.

It has already gathered over 14,000 signatures ? If it gets to 40,000, it would make it into the top five most popular petitions on the site!

Yes, do please sign this petition...we have a tremndous international reputation for the arts (which will look embarrassingly threadbare by 2012 if this carries on!),loads of arts funding is used to involve young people...and my job depends on it!

This is a quote that I posted a few months ago. I think it is totally shocking to think that the Olympics is going to cost 9 BILLION pounds.

"The total cost of hosting the 2012 Olympics in London could be as much as £9 billion.

The Treasury and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport are allegedly considering the figure, according to a report.

It is almost four times the initial £2.35billion estimate used in London's bid.

Last November, Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell admitted in parliament the costs were set to rise to £3.3billion. But that could be the amount for the construction alone, the report claims.

It is also alleged that a £2billion construction contingency fund will be set aside, with regeneration costs (£1.8billion), VAT (£1billion) and security (£900million) taking the final outlay even higher.

The Shadow Culture Secretary, Hugo Swire MP, said: 'There is no doubt that there will be real worries across the country about the huge increase in costs.

'It is time we got a proper explanation from (Chancellor) Gordon Brown on what has gone on and assurances as to what the government is doing to control the ever-increasing budget.'"

I shall certainly be signing the petition.

the olympics will be another huge white elephant for the capital like the dome .

someone called rino del zoppo signed the petition.

Enid · 23/05/2007 09:26

have done this already

the funding for the children's art groups that I help to set up a couple of years ago will be stopped in 2008 apparently - the excuse: the olympics.

(feel grouchy about them anyway as they are building more bloody roads in dorset to take the traffic down to Weymouth for the sailing [curmudgeon])

What really bugs me is that the people who submitted the winning bid blithely assumed that the Treasury would not charge them VAT. WHY???? When has the current government ever walked away from a large source of revenue? If it wasn't going to end up costing all of us a lot of money, it would be laughable.
