need some ideas for song to sing at a caberet club

as part of a course I am doing.

I am doing a course whihc is called singing wth syle, its only for fun, once a week for 9 weeks but culminates in a performance at quite a big cabaret club in Chicago ( where i'm living) it'll only be for family and friends but I need some inspiration on 3 songs I need to study and perform.

I have chosen my first one which will prob be either I Dreamed a dream from Les Mis or Unusual Way from Nine ( can't make up my mind)

I have a really eclectic taste in music but don't know a lot of songs or names or performers so am finding it difficult to think of alternatives which arent a bit too mainstream easy listening... also the idea of the course is to pick songs that ned interpretation or a character around them - so a lot of it is about almost the acting out of the song ...

I am also a soprano so some the jazzy types like, Cry me a River or Feeling Good are too low for me without transposing (which isn't necessarilly a problem)

Mt dh hates musical theatre and I'd really like to do one he can enjoy and me impress him with so would like some inspiration form you singers out there..

I'ma reasonably competent singer but havent performed since I was out school am now many years away from that!!!!

hope someone can shove some ideas my way!!!

All That Jazz from Chicago

Suppose Cabaret itself is too obvious

Something from Wicked

I feel Pretty is quite light and fun (from West Side Story)

If My Friends Could See Me Now (Sweet Charity)

Matchmaker (Fiddler on the Roof)

ChiTownLady · 23/04/2007 22:41

thanks these are great - i need to look at a few of them on itunes as i don't know all of them off my head - one of the others is doing All that jazz

Being Alive
Don't rain on my parade

islandofsodor · 23/04/2007 22:49

I was thinking of trying to contrast with I Dreamed a Dream (a fave of mine, have sung it several times)

Will have a look through my music for some weepies.

I Still Believe we were meant for each other... no idea who did it first, i heard it on the Dance with a Stranger soundtrack

BigHotMama · 23/04/2007 23:29

Over the rainbow or Fields of Gold by Eve Cassidy?

Or how about a Shirley Bassey number like Goldfinger or Diamonds are forever? My dh loves the bond themes and would be well impressed if I could belt one of those out.

harpsichordcarrier · 24/04/2007 11:21

Mack the Knife would be way too low for you I think

what about the Way You Look Tonight?
What I did for Love from Chorus Line
On my own from LesMis.
Some one to Watch Over me

deuxcheekymonkeys · 24/04/2007 11:25

How about Anything Goes....think its a cole porter number.....

Londonmamma · 24/04/2007 11:43

Here are some of my favourites - good luck!

If you could read my mind (what a tale my thoughts could tell)

By the time s/he gets to Phoenix

Killing me softly

Moon River
