Help me track down a painting before I go mad!!

I saw a painting on telly a long time ago, and I really liked it, to the extent I want it on my bedroom wall. But I have very little detail to go on!

Its an early work by a famous artist.
I seem to recall being suprised, because it was very different to later and more recognisable works.

Its very dark ,in all senses, and Goya in style.

Subject matter is 3 figures, 2 beating the other one. They all look like men, but on closer inspection, one (2?) is actually a woman, old hag type.

I had some old prints fixed by a fab picture restorer once and he had a great knowledge of general classic art - maybe you could contact a similar person locally. I know what you mean about getting a fixation about a particular picture - I kept an article on Reubens from the Sun Times mag last year and will hopefully get something of his soon - very gothic and shockingly brutal. He was considered the Tarantino of his day IYKWIM. Good luck. Try googling some of the less well known artists maybe?
