Just finished essay on it for OU course. Don't normally gush about stuff like this and don't mean to sound pretentious but really really enjoyed it. I think it has a lot to say about modern times tbh. Fab.

Er, thats it really.

Is it GE that has the marvellous naif-gets-sozzled scene? "I looked in the mirror and came to the inescapable conclusion that my hair was drunk"?

Hm, or is that David Copperfield?

Hi niceglasses you doing A210? I've just finished my essay and it was a total disaster. and it's late... I have to say I loved GE too, had never read any Dickens before. Kept going on to DP about how good it was and he said - it's charles bloody dickens, what do you expect? say no more

Surprise - yes! Just got it in the post yesterday so hope it makes it. I don't think the essay was great at all - I got totally dragged down in the social stuff, but I just really enjoyed the book. I didn't do that well on the P & P extract so have a bit to make up. Are you enjoying it? Where are you based?

I don't think the drunk hair scene was GE , but could be wrong - sounds good though.

niceglasses, I'm in East Anglia. Am enjoying the course, but finding the time to do all the reading and TMAs is proving difficult. Have got so behind with the first block that I'm going to forget it for now and have started the romantic writings bit today. I'm hopeful the poetry might make more sense. Got 66 for the first TMA, not sure if that's good or bad, but it's above the passmark, which is all that I'm concerned with at the moment.

God isn't it fab, Great Expectations is my absolute favourite Dickens

Have you read John Irving? He is a huge fan as well, wrote an essay called "Why I love Great Expectations" in his book "Piggy Sneed", and I find his books similarly meaty and satisfying.

GE is so bloody funny - Joe Gargery is just marvellous, Wemmick makes me hoot and cry at the same time, and "the pale young gentleman" - oh superb. It is also totally terrifying by turns.

The bodged up 'happy' ending is a cop out though - there is no way Pip and Estella could ever be happy together.

Thanks for this thread - I may have to go and read it right now
