War Horse - Cheap seats OK, or pay more?

Any recommendations of the best places to sit and where to avoid? I have checked Theatre Monkey, but interested to hear your experiences. Were you frustrated by a restricted view? Is it worth £57 for the middle of the circle? or are stalls seats better?

We sat right at the back but directly facing the stage.

I would probably avoid the seats to the far left or right but I don't think that the distance to the stage would matter.

I wouldn't take restricted view seats, but probably anything else should be fine - stalls would probably be better than circle, I think, from the point of view of getting the most out of the puppetry performances from the right level, but there's no need to shell out for the most expensive stalls seats.

we saw it years ago, from the cheap seats. They were on the balcony, and off to the side.

It was still one of the best theatrical experiences I've ever had. We might have missed some effects/tricks/stagecraft but it was still fabulous!

Thanks everyone. We have gone for stalls seats - hardly any seats left anyway unless you want to book more than 6 months in advance. Looking forward to it.

And we'll keep our phones turned off and on our pockets (with our hankies!) - filming and photography always forbidden in theatres!

Was hoping I might drop on seats on the day, is that extremely unlikely?

Susan, do you mean the seat prices might drop on the day or do you mean are there day seats available? According to their website, there are a limited number of day seats at £25. This will presumably be the first row or two (for War Horse that might mean you miss a bit although I saw it at the National so not sure how the staging is in the West End.) The day seats are sold at 10 a.m. but when they're gone, they're gone so for a popular show like War Horse you might need to be there in advance of that. I pass a couple of theatres on the Strand on my way to work and it varies considerably from day to day whether there are people waiting for day seats or not.

What can you comfortably afford? If I had the money, I'd sit in the stalls, slightly to one side and about five seats from the stage. I am skint and buy the cheapest I can.

annh- When the day seats are gone, do they sell any remaining seats cheaper on the day do you know?
We are going to London during the Easter holidays, mid-week and not actual Easter week but within the school holidays. I thought of just turning up that day and asking if there were any seats left. I am prepared to go around different theatres if we can't get into the first one. I have always paid full ticket price before but can't really afford it this time.

There aren't generally any remaining seats for War Horse other than the day seats, which would be your problem. Some other theatres do day tickets for sold-out productions but generally only a handful and with a long queue -- also you can sometimes pick up returns shortly before the performance (but those will be at full price and generally also a long queue).

If I were you I'd check out the Half Price Ticket Booth in Leicester Square (now rebranded as "TKTS Leicester Square"). It's open 10am-7pm in the southern part of the square and sells same-day tickets at half price. Generally these are at the extremities of the stalls -- right at the front, right at the back or over to one side or the other.

Agree with checking the TKTS booth in Leicester Sq. It is the official ticket booth of SOLT (Society of London Theatres) so you know you are getting genuine tix. They have the best choice of on-the-day tix and (I think) they don't charge a booking fee - it's been a while since I was there. I wouldn't bother going to the theatre on the day if you are not there early for day seats. Anything which they are prepared to put on offer after that will be available through TKTS anyway, along with many other offers. Don't waste your holiday time and energy walking around the different theatres themselves. You could also check lastminute.com if you are not particular about seeing one specific show.

Thanks for the advice. The TKTS booth sounds the best bet as i don't really want to queue for hours on the morning of the show if I can help it.
