Christmas Number 1s : Singles

The track at the top of the singles chart on 25th December is an annual source of speculation and intrigue. The winner tends to be thoroughly soppy, wonderfully nostalgic or utterly jingoistic! A technical note; the Christmas Number One does not always synchronise with the dates elsewhere as they refer to 'week ending' chart dates. These are the real Christmas Number Ones!

The singles chart did not begin until 1952. The Christmas Number Ones prior to 1952 are based on sheet music sales. The artists listed for those hits are the ones mainly responsible for popularising the song.

RTKM, how thoughtful of you to post that list as a memory jogger. What a lot of rubbish over the years though
It has to be 1981 and the Human League for me. First term at uni, young and in lurve, a lot of snow, and parties in pubs in the Malverns, very happy times. God how I hated that monstrous Fiat ad which took the piss out of the song...

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 09/12/2005 12:00

Ha! Knew I'd be in this one!!!!!!!!!

nailpolish · 09/12/2005 12:00

may not have been no.1 but it has to be Wham! and Last Christmas

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 09/12/2005 12:01

And for this year it will be..............

I'M LUKE I'M 5 AND MY DAD'S BRUCE LEE
HE DRIVES ME AROUND IN HIS JCB!!!!!!!

JonesTheSteamingSanta · 09/12/2005 12:05

Best song on that list is definitely Human League's Don't You Want Me.

On a more seasonal note though - I am very fond of Shakin' Stevens' - Merry Christmas Everyone as well (had a big crush on Shaky as a teenager and remember being very chuffed when he got to no.1)

sorrelsleighbells · 09/12/2005 12:07

Fairytale of new York- the pogues and Kirsty mcColl
just the best!

JingleShells · 09/12/2005 12:12

Anyway, either Slade or Shakin Stevens for me

PeachyPlumFairy · 09/12/2005 12:21

FIMBObellsFimbleAllTheWay · 09/12/2005 12:51

I love:-
Do They Know Its Christmas - Original Band Aid
Last Christmas - Wham

And my factor is Johnny Mathis - When A Child is Born

KBearthePolarBear · 09/12/2005 12:59

Snap Fimbo - the original Band Aid one gives me chills. I remember it so vividly - surprising really as it was in the alcohol-infused days of my youth.

I love Last Christmas - was singing it all day yesterday to the annoyance of my colleague. Didn't care, I love it.

MerlinsBeard · 09/12/2005 12:59

whats the one that goes...u scumbag u maggot u cheap lousy faggot??

Thats my fave!!

Soon to be replaced by the JCB sing

JenumGeranium · 09/12/2005 13:05

Awwww mine would have to be Little Jimmy Osmond - Long haired lover from Liverpool! I would have only been 1 and a half though!

I am from Liverpool and used to have long hair! Lol.

My fave ever Christmas song would have to be Wham's Last Christmas though!

I love you George!

JenumGeranium · 09/12/2005 13:06

My mum always used to play Johnny Mathis especially at Christmas time, so that song always brings back a lot of memories!
