Dh and I were doing a long walk near Kirkby Lonsdale on sat and kept coming across these curious little walled squares. We had absolutely no idea what they were.
All the ones we saw (probably 9 or 10) were a boxed off corner in the sheep fold proper, each with an entrance hole at the bottom into the field and a great big boulder inside. The dry stone walling looked exactly like the very old sheep fold walls, you simply couldn't tell they were a later addition.
Best experience of modern art I have had in ages. You have no idea of all the theories dh and I came up with as to what their purpose was. Made the walk even more enjoyable.
