The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollingshurst
Any Human Heart by William Boyd -really fantastic made me cry buckets at the end

and have just started The Star of The Sea by Joseph O'Connor

actually ther eare five books in Australia, the rest of us have to make to with a system of semiphore and beacons from those who have been lucky enough to read them

Loved the line of beauty and Star of the Sea, so will go for your third recommendation too Enid. I've just started 'the amazing adventures of Kavalier & Clay' by Michael Chabon which i'm loving !
