Scam. Since when would HMRC threaten to “do a lot of bad things to you”?

Block and ignore

Needmorelego · 24/02/2023 10:22

That screams scam to me.
Never press 1. Ever.

jizzlord · 24/02/2023 10:25

Why would you think this is real Confused

LadyLaLaa · 24/02/2023 10:27

You can report this.

Online
Report a suspicious HMRC phone calll_
Use the online form to tell HMRC if you’ve received a phone call you do not think is genuine. You’ll need to give your email address.
We may share your email address and phone number with other organisations to close down the scam.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 24/02/2023 10:28

Definite scam. If you owe HMRC money, they don't contact you by phone. Do they even have your number?

LadyLaLaa · 24/02/2023 10:28

That didn't work but it's on here, scroll to 'online'

GoodChat · 24/02/2023 10:36

Sounds like exactly the kind of thing HMRC would threaten you with to me.

custardbear · 24/02/2023 10:39

Yep scam ... I've had these calls a few times

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/02/2023 10:40

Delete. Scam.

ToDoListAddict · 24/02/2023 11:43

HMRC will always send a letter and never call you.
If you are worried you do owe money to HMRC, Google the official number and call them but these voicemails/calls are 100% a scam.

Barannca · 24/02/2023 11:47

HMRC don't phone people, and they certainly don't leave threatening messages. They would never say they would do a lot of bad things. They would write if someone had unpaid tax, and mention a fine if applicable. It's obviously a scam

ImissLemmings · 24/02/2023 11:48

Definitely a scam

The government will never ever chase you by phone. They don’t have the time, the staff or the inclination.

I was being sarcastic

Numbers with 330 in the area code can be calls made using Microsoft Teams I believe so that might be why you can't find it on Google.

MrsJackRackham · 24/02/2023 11:51

It's His Majesty's Revenue & Customs now. Out of all the things we get wrong we get that bit right (unless it's on an envelope) 🙂

CatOnTheChair · 24/02/2023 11:52

HMRC have sent out a warrent for my arrest at least 3 times in the past 5 years.
I'm still out at large, paying my taxes, with an up to date address and enhanced DBS check after the first call.
Pretty sure they could have found me by now!

That’s not true at all. If you actually owe tax for whatever reason, they will call you and try to arrange payment/ a payment plan. They will call every 3 months or so to see if your circumstances have changed and you can pay any more/clear your existing debt.

Never in a threatening way though

Shoot4theMoon · 25/02/2023 14:40

Thanks @LadyLaLaa I have reported it

Try the WhoCalledMe UK service, which allows you to check numbers and report scams. I’d lay money that if you log the number that purported to be from HMRC they would already have it listed as a scam.
