He passed away recently, and we were given copies of his poems, I never even knew he wrote.
I have namechanged as family will recognise his poem thus knowing my posting name ...
He left us for some time when I was young, he had severe alcohol problems, but 10 years ago he fought his demons and won. The last 10 years of his life were spent alcohol free and in the middle of his family, 10 wonderful years, with a wonderful man, finally free and happy... Then cancer hit. I am so proud of him and miss him so very much.
_ TRY AGAIN _
In the lonliness of a crowded room,
A young man stands alone.
The talk and chatter he cannot hear,
His thoughts are all his own.
He thinks how life has treated him,
And of all the things he's done,
The hurt and pain that he has caused,
And of death, thats sure to come.
His eyes move round from face to face,
In the hope he'll see a friend,
A helping hand is all he needs,
But no, it must all end.
Why must I drink? he thinks aloud,
And people turn and stare,
He sees disgust and hate and fear,
He runs, he knows not where.
As morning breaks he lifts his head,
The sunlight hits his eyes,
The rats and spiders they'reall gone,
But still he sits and cries.
He reaches down inside his coat,
His mind is filled with guilt,
His hands are trembling violently,
But not a drop is spilt.
He's calmer now, his mind is clear,
Or so he seems to think,
But all his rational thinkings gone,
Drowned by that first drink.
He'll drink again, I'm sure of that,
He needs to stand so high,
This little man of thought and deed
Is only, six feet, five.
But one day soon, by some strange power,
Hope will fill his heart,
And a voice will say "Just try again"
And a full new life will start.
