Poetry questions: Am I doing it right? Can I enter competitions?

I'm French but I have been in Britain for years, so my inner language is pretty messed up. I've been writing poetry in French since I was a teenager (although not continuously), but I often feel like writing in English, simply because my life is in English, I guess.
I've written several songs in English but have no idea if that counts as poetry. Can I enter those in poetry competitions or do I stand no chance? Are there special criteria "poetry" should fulfil in this country??
I have no idea, as everything I learnt about poetry was in France, at school.
I'm willing to send anyone a sample of my english stuff if you promise to be very kind as I'm horribly shy when it comes to my writing !

have a look at this website to see some history of English poetry up to modern day. Pretty much anything seems to go, to be honest so just give it a go!
