Would anyone mind critiquing my blog?

I had a freelancer build it for me and I’m not sure that I like it. I’d be grateful for any opinions. www.soverysarah.co.uk

Can you just say what it's about?

AmberSpy · 31/10/2025 12:27

What is it you want opinions on? The content or the design of the site itself?

The link doesn't work for me. Sorry. Says cannot be found. Android on google

She's mistyped it as ".co.uj". Correct link: https://soverysarah.co.uk/

I've had a look. It's well written but there's not a lot of substance to it (unless I'm completely uneducated and evidently missing something)

you write well though, no doubt about that! But for me it was missing any substance or getting to an actual point. I only read one of your entries though.

Re the design: it's fine. Fits in with contemporary style for 'reading' as contrasted with shopping or rapid scrolling. was the cream & brown theme your choice? Looks a bit like an attempt at retro style. It's quite relaxing.

I just tried to visit your blog and got this: Safari can’t open this page because the server can’t be found.

What’s the blog about? Are you going to be discussing anything other than your daily life? If not, what’s the draw of your daily life, to strangers who might come across your blog? I ask that not to be unkind (I also have 2 young adult children and a small one in the early years of primary school), but I wouldn’t imagine anyone who didn’t know me would find a blog about it interesting, and friends who do know me already know what’s going on in my life because we speak on the phone or text. I might start a blog if I wanted to share ideas/views on a subject of broader interest, but not to broadcast the details of my domestic life.

Not a mum sorry, so a dads thoughts.

As a sample, I don't get this. Quote "So, there you have it. An introduction to the various bits of my life. My aging life, let’s not forget. The minute I start spending £50 on slippers or scarifying the lawn is the time when I’ll be found in the local nursing home (as long as it accepts consumption of gin) "

I just can't see the connection between either and being ready for a nursing home.

Not a lot of content. I just see something about self published books, but nothing about the books jumps out. I click on the blog tag, and there is no blog.

So sorry, there is nothing there to comment about.

You say you have an old blog, so a link to that in your new site would be good. Maybe populate your new one with old posts too ?

SpigTheFish · 31/10/2025 13:51

🤣 ... whose decision was it to add 'relatable and entertaining' at the footer? I think I'd remove that.

it's OK but not that entertaining, a bit like a random Mumsnet post. Sorry. Can you choose ONE thing and explore that maybe?

You do write beautifully though and its a delight to see proper punctuation and sentence construction.

Redberryhot · 31/10/2025 13:59

The design isn't great for accessibility - some of the font sizes are too small and the contrast between text and background makes it hard to read. There are lots of online accessibility checkers you can run it through - a good web designer should know about this.

I'm not sure of the purpose of the blog - is it aimed at your books' readers or giving advice to other authors? Try to clarify that and then work on search engine optimisation.

P0loGirl · 31/10/2025 14:01

Thank you everyone! Sorry for mistyping the address 🙈

it’s a good point about the why and what. I’m an author and my book is due to be published next year so I was kind of setting up the blog in advance of that…..hopefully that will tie it together a bit more.

Yes it was my choice. Before that he’d put hideous photos as the background
