November Writing

For anyone who would like to write during November, may have a word target to hit, or would like to write daily, or goes down research rabbit holes, or has other writing challenges... 😊

Thanks for this @HundredAcreOwl , was just about to pop on and ask the same question!

Nanowrimo seems to have disappeared, but I'm embarking on a new MS today with the aim of 50K words by the end of the month, so.

I've completely surprised myself by wanting to write something which might be best categorised as romance...

A new adventure

Nanowrimo seems to have disappeared

Has it? They emailed me recently, I've registered and read some of the NaNoWriMo Prep 101 exercises. Words written = zero, mind you.

Maybe this page accounts for the changes? https://nanowrimo.org/changes-at-nanowrimo-may-2024

This page also has a bunch of references to 2024... https://nanowrimo.org/national-novel-writing-month Not dead yet?

Essentially, yes, it has. I've done it for a few years, by now the site would be buzzing with zoom events, chat and stuff. There was a problem with not safeguarding under 18s in their own area, ignoring the reports. And other stuff, no-one taking responsibility.

But the communities that I am in - mostly on-line - that have grown from the original idea, are still strong. All are explicitly distancing from nanowrimo.org. I'm in one for words, another for time.

I agree that the Prep 101 exercises are brilliant!

What a shame. It's such a great idea.

But Mumsnetters are probably not stunned by safeguarding failures... 😥 Good luck with your writing!

There is still a groundswell of ex nano groups, really encouraging writing. I think November writing will continue for a long time!

They just handled it so badly. My AC work in schools, the moment anyone discloses it is taken seriously.

@CrystalSingerFan Is your name related to the Anne McCaffrey books? I love the Pern dragon books, and almost everything else she wrote!

Absolutely!

Personally I think the first Crystal Singer book has aged amazingly well - some of the Pern dragon books less so, although I loved them when I was younger.

Such a shame it's fallen apart.

But well done if schools are paying attention and please thank your AC (Adult Children?) for keeping the next generation educated and safe.

The Ship who Sang is probably my favourite, but also also the ones addressing sixth sense abilities.

Newish ideas, I think, when she wrote them.

I must re-read that! It was a dear friend's favourite of hers.

Well today I have looked hard at my main characters to see which one is actually the hero.

GwenogJones · 01/11/2024 21:18

I managed to write over 3000 words today. I'm using Nano to finish off two stories. I am using the website because I don't like discord and find it to be just another way to procrastinate, and I like the graph and the badges - they help me keep on track. But the website has been really glitchy today.

HundredAcreOwl · 01/11/2024 22:38

My update: I've not managed an hour, but I have edited a 'homework' to where I am happy to send it in. Happy writing, everyone 😀

Well done! Have just finished work and hoping to get hero's character arc done between getting home and pizza night.

Well done! That's a lot of words...

I hear you about discord and procrastination...but a group I'm with runs a competition with an aim to write daily, and I find the sprints some groups run useful.

I have done zero! Monday is my start date. Well done everyone who has put words on a page.

@PlopSofa in my experience showing people work in progress is the fastest way to kill your confidence and enthusiasm. I'd finish it first and then worry about whether it's good. You'll only get better by writing and finishing work anyway so you have to do that whether it's good or not.

GwenogJones · 04/11/2024 16:57

I'm managing to stay slightly ahead of where I'm meant to be so far. I've currently written 6880 words since November started, and I needed to be on 5001. I need to write today's 1667 words later this evening, but I find I write best just before bed.

I've been using "Save the cat! writes a novel" to try out ideas for storylines. The method is a bit like "colour by numbers" in that it has lots of models for plot progression.
It has made me see the scenes I have written very differently. Hope to get a bit done tonight and a chunk tomorrow.
