How about a “Write 500 words a day” thread?

snowqu33n · 21/03/2023 04:38

I’ve previously benefited from MUNOWRIMO thread and I am working on another novel, but I want to stay consistent.
Any writers out there? Novelists, non-fiction writers, poets, or people who need to get their shit together to meet a deadline?
The goal is consistency, an achievable amount every day.
You can post your daily goal and how you are doing with it.
You can tell us the type of writing you’re working on, or just your daily word count.
Anybody interested?

@Bella43 do you not want to self publish?

Bella43 · 31/05/2023 16:49

I might do if I can't find a traditional publisher. The thing that puts me off with self publishing is the cost of editing and having someone design a front cover for me and sort out the formatting. I'm not very good at things like that.

Costacoffeeplease · 31/05/2023 18:07

I employed someone to do all that for me although I could prob do the formatting myself now, definitely for an ebook. I’d always pay for an editor and a cover designer though

Costacoffeeplease · 31/05/2023 18:08

I love being able to track orders and royalties on a daily basis through the kdp dashboard

Bella43 · 31/05/2023 23:09

Yes I can imagine it's very satisfying seeing the sales on the dashboard. It makes all the hard work worthwhile 😊

How’s everyone getting on?

I’ve been really lazy but have managed 500 words of a 1000 word short story today

LuciferRising · 13/06/2023 16:51

I'm chipping away at editing. Sometimes it's a few lines and sometimes a chapter. I'm spending at least half a day per chapter and this is only the first round of edits. Gonna take forever. What I have found is that my writing has improved significantly from the forums and books I read so I hope when I get to line editing it will improve even more.

You?

Costacoffeeplease · 19/06/2023 16:40

Slow going but my 1000 word short story is finished!

Bella43 · 21/06/2023 22:49

@LuciferRising I'm glad your writing has improved. I really need to get back to editing my novel, you've reminded me to do so 😊

@Costacoffeeplease Ahh that's great your short story is complete. Will you publish it or consider entering it into a writing competition?

Costacoffeeplease · 22/06/2023 10:56

Originally it was for a blog/newsletter submission but I think the date has passed now.

I’m now toying with the idea of a short story anthology, if I could write maybe a dozen or so stories - but some of the people who have read it have suggested I carry on and perhaps turn it into a novel as ‘they were intrigued and wanted to know more’ 🤷‍♀️

Guillebeaux · 23/06/2023 12:33

No creative writing happening here at all, I really miss it. I think it’s partly because I’m not reading very creatively at the moment, and also because writing is now the day job and much as I want to do something else during my time off I usually end up studying some tedious work stuff. Luckily this contract will expire any time between now and September so hopefully I can pick up where I left off.

It’s encouraging to follow the progress of my threadmates on here though!

Bella43 · 26/06/2023 07:40

@Costacoffeeplease That sounds like an excellent idea. If people are intrigued, that's novel territory. Have you thought of writing a plan to see where you could expand it?

@Guillebeaux I haven't been very creative lately either. I've written a short story and dug very deep into it but nothing else apart from that. Like you, my day job has taken over as well as all the end of term things for my daughters like parents evening, trips, helping with their homework. I'm hoping the summer holidays will give me chance to do some writing but with the girls off school I can't always get to my laptop. I've been doing a bit of reading though so that's one good thing 😊

Costacoffeeplease · 26/06/2023 07:58

Yes I might, I didn’t really want to start a novel but maybe I can expand it to a longer, but still short, story. A novella?

Bella43 · 26/06/2023 18:03

Or novelette even. I've always loved the idea of writing a novelette. I'm the same as you, I just wouldn't want to commit to a novel right now. I'm more of a short story kind of girl. I enjoy reading them too. I love it how you can be transported in such a short space of time. Well done you for creating a story people want more of. When all's said and done, that's what we're aiming for isn't it? A piece of fiction you think about long after you've read it 😊

What's your story about, if you don't mind me asking?

Costacoffeeplease · 27/06/2023 11:10

It’s a fairly ambiguous account of a very short trip to Nice, with a twist at the end

Costacoffeeplease · 27/06/2023 11:11

Ambiguous in that it’s not entirely clear who is on the trip

Bella43 · 27/06/2023 19:21

Ooo that's really intriguing. Now I want more!

Costacoffeeplease · 28/06/2023 08:50

😊 thanks. I’ll try to get on with it!

Guillebeaux · 28/06/2023 10:11

I also love the idea of writing a novella. Good luck Costa, you’ve piqued my interest too!

Had a brainwave last night about what to do with my novel (which is about minus 22000 words). A fresh start in a new genre that will be satisfying to write (and hopefully also to read) with no literary pretensions whatsoever. The best part is I will be bingeing shamelessly on genre books to learn about plotting as I go. I’ll use my morning pages time to add to the story in longhand and then type each entry up after work.

Guillebeaux · 02/07/2023 14:11

It’s so nice to finally have a positive word count, even if it is just +588 so far. It should be 1088 but yesterday’s 500 are in a document I can’t find so I started again.

I also started a document for its sequel, somewhat optimistically. Thinking of the current book as the first in a series or a trilogy somehow makes it much less daunting and more fun to write.

How is everyone else getting on?
