What should I be aware of when researching agents?

Hi all - apologies if this has been done already!

I'm researching agents at the moment for my historical fiction novel, and am feeling a bit overwhelmed. Are there any red flags or other things that I should be aware of while doing my research? I'd love to know.

Thanks in advance Smile

Make a list of your favourite contemporary writers, do some googling to find out who their agents are, and start there. It's an instant endorsement, knowing that an agent already represents someone whose work you like, so presumably has similar taste to you. Good luck!

Thank you so much!

(Bumping for any more tips...)

You probably know this already, but if any "agent" tries to make you pay anything for any service they provide, steer well clear.

Follow them on Twitter - often agents will talk about manuscript wish lists. Some agents post all the time and you can a good feel for their likes and dislikes.
