Good way to show the passage of time?

So my MS is set over a period of about a year, sometimes a few weeks have passed between chapters. Is it best to refer to this, somehow, in the chapter or would that be too annoying? Should I trust the reader would know?

TIA

I would just mention a date at the beginning of your next chapter and let the reader come to the conclusion that some period of time has passed.

"It was Easter when he received a call from..."

The sun maybe? Certainly now it's autumn here the days are obviously noticeably shorter. The nights come in quicker. If spring then the opposite. "the longer days and sun high in the sky saw..."

Plants? "The trees now in full bloom with their blossom raining down when before we crunched through their decaying leaves.."

I laughed my pants off in one of the Twilight books when Bella’s current heartbreak was illustrated by having chapters entitled “March”, “April” etc. followed by a blank page. But I wouldn’t recommend it, it was incredibly wanky (obviously, it was Twilight).

Seasons are good. E.g. The town was packed with tourists under the sweaty summer sun. Mrs Jones thought about all that had happened over the last few months. Etc.

Personally I quite like books that start each chapter with a date. Maybe not to everyone's taste though Smile
