Mid-grade novel mostly for boys - trying to get an agent urgh!

Any advice? I have had some feedback that they like the idea/writing but that it's such a niche market that they didn't want to take it on.

Im wondering if anyone has any advice for this genre. Meanwhile, I will find another wave of enthusiasm and submit to a few more....

I think if the feedback is that it's fine but they're just worried about the market you might as well keep submitting. And maybe try US agents as well as UK?

Yes, I would persevere. It only takes one! And in the meantime, write something new.

Is it possible you're pitching your book in a way that makes it sound more niche than it is? What makes it of interest to boys rather than girls? If you can convince them both boys and girls would enjoy it, you've instantly doubled your potential market.

May also be worth double checking which agents you're querying - sorry if this is dead obvious, but do make sure they're looking for MG books!

Thanks everyone - yes I'm querying those that want MG books. I don't really niche it in my pitch but because it is about cars and the main character is a boy, it kind of is a boys book. Although there is a girl in it.

I'd like to make it a series so maybe I will start on book 2. It's hard to be motivated to write more while getting the first one rejected though!

I wouldn't write book 2 in a series until you have interest in book 1, unless it can really stand alone. Otherwise you run the risk of having a second book you can't sell. Take the feedback and act on it, ie write something less niche next.

There was a lot of caution in 2016 among publishers due to Brexit. Write your next one whilst you're submitting. Have something ready in case you have to shelve it. Having said that- good luck! if it's finished and landing on agents's desks, then it's in the right place.
