NaNoWriMo - what's it all about?

Twine88 · 29/09/2016 13:55

I know roughly the idea behind it, but I wondered if anyone had actually taken part and had any thoughts to share?

My novel is already in excess of the 50k but, is still all over the place and needs much editing.

Any thoughts appreciated, even if you considered it and decided no.

Which part of the forum is that in Jos?

MrsFionaCharming · 13/11/2017 12:49

Joining in with the 25,000 word happy dance!

I’ve put on ‘living on a prayer’ to celebrate!

BiglyBadgers · 13/11/2017 14:55

Whoop! High five charming! Grin

MrsFionaCharming · 13/11/2017 16:56

And now I’m at 29.5k! :o

I’m hoping to do another 500 words before Guides, then take the rest of the evening off. DP is away this week, so in theory I’ll have 4 uninterrupted evenings of writing!

BiglyBadgers · 13/11/2017 17:12

That's amazing charming. I haven't done any today at all! Hoping to get some done after dinner.

MrsFionaCharming · 13/11/2017 17:59

Well that 500 words grew and I’ve made it to 31,000. I don’t know where this inspiration has come from today, but I’ll try and pass you some virtually.

BiglyBadgers · 13/11/2017 21:27

I think I could do won't some! I have managed just over 1k and it was a serious slog. I am finding this chapter really hard going, it's sort of moved in a slightly different direction to how I thought it would go when I started and while it is interesting it's very emotional and challenging to write. I will try and finish it off tomorrow and move onto something a bit lighter I hope Smile

Jomaco · 13/11/2017 22:07

I'm just over 20k, I've found it difficult to keep up momentum over the weekend but done alright today.
I've found I write more in the evening. I'm a morning person so always try to write in mornings but I'm too busy thinking of everything I need to do so do better in the evening once I can relax. So I'm going to stop trying to force myself to write in mornings!
I'm already trying to stop myself editing, I have a few scenes I want put in a different order but I know once I start that I'll not stop messing about. I'll save it as something to do in December.

charming tarot readings here tarot plotting

MrsFionaCharming · 14/11/2017 12:36

That’s brilliant, thanks Jos

I wrote 7,000 words yesterday, which DP pointed out is more than my dissertation was in total.

BiglyBadgers · 14/11/2017 18:22

Wow! That's amazing charming Star

I am going to some sort of writing talk with my new nano friend. Grin

I have realised that at the moment a significant number of my characters are suffering from serious depression. I think I need to introduce someone a bit more cheerful for my own mental health.

JosBoys · 14/11/2017 18:50

charming 7000 words in one day is fab. I've realised I'm quite a slow writer but I finally got over 20,000 words today - hurrah!
Bigly I know what you mean about your own mental health. My subplot is very dark. I can only write so much and then I need to go back to the other strand which is much lighter by comparison.

annandale · 14/11/2017 22:44

Still just about keeping up. It is more the knowledge that you lot are all moving on that keeps me panting in the rear, than the NaNo deadline. Emulation, emulation, a thin paste for wallpaper (anyone else ever read The Crown of Success?)

BiglyBadgers · 15/11/2017 16:25

Few, well I think I've finally finished my really depressing chapter for a bit, so can move onto something else. Hopefully things will move a bit faster now.

annandale · 16/11/2017 06:57

Glad to hear that Bigly, hope things are getting more cheerful.

I'm going a bit slower since I've actually started writing original stuff rather than retyping what I did last year! But I can really see the difference in writing a larger amount each day. My plot got really disjointed last year writing only 200 words a day. I've written a long dialogue and a group conversation scene that I don't think I could have done in little bits. I'm aaaaalmoost at 25000 words so I'm a bit behind, really. Hope I can do a little more at the weekend. Really enjoying it though.

BiglyBadgers · 16/11/2017 10:37

Keep at it Anna. I am really enjoying it too. It is amazing to see how much more I can now write in a day. Now anything under 1500 words seems a bit of a slow day. If nothing else this has really got my writing muscles working.

I just managed to hit 30k and had the surreal thought of 'hurrah! Only 20k to go!'. Since when did writing 20k words seem like the downhill home stretch. Grin

Jomaco · 16/11/2017 13:50

I've just reached 26k but I've rebelled and started on something different. My original idea just wasn't working and I was prepared to keep going with it until the end, hoping something would happen but I wasn't enjoying writing it and it was becoming a slog. So I started on an idea I've had in my head on and off for years but not something I would normally write, just to see where it takes me. It's going well and I'm enjoying it, so all good so far.

JosBoys · 16/11/2017 22:51

I've reached 25k. I cheated a little by using a chapter I had written years ago. It was interesting to see how my characters have changed and my writing style. It was from a point when I was attending a writing class but actually I think my style is more confident now.

annandale · 16/11/2017 23:56

Yes! 25,000!!!

At some point, I am going to have to decide how this ends. I've already found what was supposed to be a villain turning into a thoroughly decent chap patting ten year olds on the head (literally). It may be one of those books where nothing bad happens.

WriterByTheSea · 17/11/2017 02:31

Hey, Everyone!

I am Silver Chalice on NANOWRIMO! and I would love to be friends with you!

I am working on this epic series of 3 books. . .and have 350,000 words done on them. . .and my goal is to divide these vast pages into 3 good places, which involves resquencing things, rewriting things, reshaping some plot, renewing some things that I phased out, and creating all new things to put more glitter on top. :)

The first book in the series is called MALIBU WISH, the second is MALIBU BLUE, and the final one is MALIBU FOREVER. I know they sound sappy perhaps. . .but they are not. So I am inspired to keep typing away for eternity, and part of my typing eternity involves NANOWRIMO.

I look forward to seeing you there and cheering you on!
Take care, and Happy Writing!

BiglyBadgers · 17/11/2017 08:44

After a few days of barely managing 1k a day I had an epic writing binge yesterday and am now on 34.5k! Shock

My head feels a bit squiffy today, but I really feel like I have got over the hump now and am whizzing towards the 50k.

I have the opposite happing with my characters Anna, my main character who was supposed to be a classic fantasy heroin has gone full on baddie and happily embracing the dark side. Now all my characters are terrible people! I really need to introduce someone a bit nice. Maybe I am just incapable of writing nice people. Confused

MrsFionaCharming · 17/11/2017 10:03

I’ve taken a few days off to do some Christmas crafts, planning to get back to it tonight, and hopefully reach 40k over the weekend.

annandale · 18/11/2017 08:14

Embrace the darkness Bigly. Lots of nice people do terrible things. Maybe keep the character nice but the evil goes on anyway. I'm reading a terrifying book called 'War against the Weak: Eugenics and America's Campaign to Create a Master Race" and it's full of lovely people Shock

Witchend · 18/11/2017 23:22

Feeling quite pleased to get to 37K tonight. Definitely feels possible now, and I think I probably will got to 50K before I finish, which when I was at 25K I didn't think so.

I have a child panting over my shoulder to read it, but I'm not sure that I won't add some at the beginning as some of that seemed a bit rushed so I've suggested they wait until the end.

MrsFionaCharming · 19/11/2017 16:26

Got the email from NaNo about winners tshirts, and thought I’d order it now as motivation so I could proudly wear it on the last day. Except it’s actually not a very nice shirt, but disappointed but oh well.

I’m on 32k, but I always do best on Mondays, so I have high hopes for tomorrow.
