Agonising wait...

My agent called me on Friday following an email from an editor at one of the big publishers. The editor said she loved my second book (1st one had a couple of near misses but wasn't picked up) and asked whether it was still available, as she knew there'd been interest from another editor, and what rights we would be offering.

My agent seems to think an offer might be on its way. I'm desperately trying not to get my hopes up as I know the editor could change her mind, or be unable to get it past the acquisitions meeting etc etc.

So it's now just a questions of waiting. And checking email and phone a thousand times a day, obviously.

Helpfully, about five minutes after I had the conversation with my agent, I got a commission through from a magazine I write for regularly, asking me to do a very complicated piece at short notice as they'd been let down. So I actually do have to concentrate on something other than email checking, which is probably just as well!

Soothing noises and back stroking would all be appreciated...

And it's worth so much more when you do achieve it. Think of an escalator to get you to the top of Everest - would you feel you'd achieved anything?!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/09/2015 12:10

The view would still be good Grin

MissBattleaxe · 11/09/2015 13:13

Countess and Imperial- quite right. Plus if it was that easy everyone would be doing it.

Writing is very hard because you put your heart and soul into it on the off chance that it might get published, but you never actually know for sure.

It heartens me that even well established popular authors get bad days- you only have to look at Amazon reviews to see that Marion Keyes and Joanna Trollope get bad reviews and "not her best" comments. This makes me realise that even successful writers get setbacks and no work is perfect to everyone.

My favourite motivational saying is a simple one "never ever ever give up". Lots of people do and even more start writing and never finish it, so you're ahead of all those already. They have dropped by the wayside as you keep running that marathon.

Just thought I'd update this thread.

I got an offer from the same publishing house for my new novel! Same editor, coming out in early 2017.

Feeling strangely calm at the moment...

Wow, just found this thread, and I like happy endings! :) What is the book about?

Congratulations!!

Linds53 · 28/01/2016 21:48

Brilliant news! Congratulations!

wordassociationfootball · 29/01/2016 09:48

Kungfu - that's fantastic. Just re-read this thread. Clearly no 'marmite' issues this time. Congratulations. It's really good to hear the details of the process; the specifics of the hoops. (The length of the catatonia Grin)

I'm in last hoorah (deluding self) of re-writing my first novel to the notes from the agent I signed with last September. I am the happiest and most creative I've ever felt. Even melting out words (10k over) puts me in this wonderful flow state. Yes, as a prof writer (animation) I need an income but the pleasure is enormous.

Again ..... CONGRATULATIONS KUNG FU Star Star Star Star Star

srslylikeomg · 29/01/2016 09:58

Smile how cool!

MissBattleaxe · 29/01/2016 13:16

Fantastic news Kung Fu! I'm so happy for you. Thanks for updating us with your wonderful bulletin. Star

CocktailQueen · 29/01/2016 13:17

Woo! What brilliant news. Congratulations!! Flowers

What's the book about? What's it called?

DottyBee · 29/01/2016 17:39

Fabulous news. Congratulations.

kungfupannda · 30/01/2016 08:41

Thank you! It's literary/speculative fiction. Won't out myself with the title as I'm not officially allowed to announce it until after the trade press release which should be next week.

I am currently desperately trying to take a decent headshot - I take a very, very bad photo, so I may have to let DS2 draw a crayon picture of me instead. His pictures always make me look nice and thin...

Congratulations - that's wonderful news!!

This thread title caught my eye as I am waiting for a decision from an editorial board about my book proposal - non-fiction so the process is slightly different but the bit about the waiting and constant email checking definitely resonated!

I read your thread and it's great to get to the happy outcome at the end - it must feel fabulous!

MissBattleaxe · 30/01/2016 12:28

So exciting! Do get back to us when you can reveal the name. I for one will definitely buy it.

ImperialBlether · 30/01/2016 12:33

Fantastic! I have a terrible memory - I started to read the thread thinking it was a recent one and was amazed I'd contributed towards it! Congratulations - you will soon be at the top of Everest!

wordassociationfootball · 30/01/2016 13:55

Kungfu - yes, have the crayon drawing. That would really cool Grin

PrimalLass · 30/01/2016 14:01

Well done!

Re the photo, I took about 200 before I got one I liked. My trick is to hold your phone/camera at arms length with two hands, with your hands above head height and against a wall (stops the wobble). Look up at the camera.

Linds53 · 30/01/2016 19:32

I went to my local shopping centre and spent a tenner getting a decent head shot. It has been so worth it to have a photo that doesn't make me cringe every time it's used.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/02/2016 16:54

Ooh, Kungfu, just seen this! Yessssssss! I am so pleased for you - congratulations!

Madhairday · 08/02/2016 17:55

That's brilliant, kungfu and so exciting Smile Wine

kungfupannda · 12/02/2016 17:21

Thank you all! It's finally announced so I've been able to go on Facebook and scream about it.

I did get a decent photo done. There was photoshopping involved...

Which agency is it? (pm me if you would rather not say on here).

ImperialBlether · 12/02/2016 20:04

Oooh PM me too, KungFu!

Mine was submitted to editors on Thursday, so now it's just the long, agonising wait!

kungfupannda · 13/02/2016 12:19

PMs sent as requested!

OP posts:
MissBattleaxe · 15/02/2016 11:14

Would you be OK to PM too? I'd love to buy it.
