Thank you so much EggsOvaryZee and MiddleEnglish for the links. I have seen the 2nd one before but not the 1st one. It looks as most competitions are not FREE. At least they are free for children but my children are still very young.

Try Booktrust www.booktrust.org.uk for a detailed list of short story competitions. You'll find others by googling 'short story competitions'.
I've listed the Bath Short Story Award www.bathshortstoryaward.co.uk which has a first prize of £500 plus other prizes. Deadline March 30th, 2013. Entries up to 2,200 words. Even if you don't win but make the long list, or preferably the short list of a competition, you'll not only have gained valuable skills but you'll have something to add to your writing CV.
