Anyone with experience of writing submission letters?

I finished a picture book a while ago, but am only just plucking up the courage to submit it to some agents.
I have written a submission letter to accompany it, but have no idea whether or not it is appropriate.
Would anyone with experience in such matters be prepared to help me?
