Advice please 🙏🏻We have moved to Ireland from the Uk just over a year ago and still have not got round to transferring the vehicle registration for our 2 cars.. has anyone else done this? How hard is it to do and will there be a lot of fees to pay? My husband was pulled by customs the other day and had to pay €800 spot fine and given 7 days to start the process. 🙈

You should have done it when you first came over and it would have been free. Although there might be a way around it if you go back over and come back. When I did it a few years ago, I needed lots of evidence that it was recent, the boat ticket, address of old and new homes, etc. Then the car was examined.

I would imagine the cost would be a lot less than €800 fine. Look at the above from Jane and get it done.

Thank you all for your replies. I know I should have done it when we got here, but I just wasn't sure if the kids would settle. My DS is Autistic so was wanting to make sure he was ok, then time just disappeared. 🙈 I have filled in a TOR form and made an appointment with the Local VRT centre this week, hopefully I can give all documents needed and get it sorted 🙏🏻

Hi do you have a PSC card? if not apply to your local welfare office as you'll need one for the registration. Before going to the inspection you need to apply to the Revenue for an exemption certificate for VRT / they will need a sheaf of documentary evidence - bank statements, proof of address, insurance docs, car purchase docs etc. Hopefully you owned the car for more than 6 months before moving otherwise you have to pay the registration fee as well as a late registration fine. Also if the car was purchased after Jan 2021 you'll need to pay Customs duty because of Brexit. It's a very tricky business we recently moved from the North, took great care reading the rules and applying to the Remus within a week of moving and conferring with 3 car deslership firms. Two months in we are still going through the process and have not been given exemption for one of our two cats ( 7k bill coming up). it's been the hardest part of the move but you were crazy not dealing with this and researching before your move

I did it a few years back, before Brexit though. It involved a lot of forms, but can't remember it costing anything. And I got a credit for motor tax as they honoured my UK tax disk.

When I did this in 2021 I filled in the documentation on line, attached the proofs required, and there is A LOT. Then I waited for the application to be approved. Which came in letter form, I was instructed how to book for test and then they gave me new registration number for plates to be made etc. I got exemption for my car and my husband for his van. AFAIK you are allowed 1 vehicle each tax free. I was all in date though.
