Oíche Shamna Sona Daoibh!

I remember my kids saying Happy Halloween 🦇 is a bit weird. But I don't know how else to put it !

What did you do for Halloween when you were kids in Ireland for those of you who are over 50?
We did the sticking your head in a dish of water to try and get an apple with your teeth and hanging an apple from the ceiling using string and trying take a bite of it.
I can't remember if these activities had names.
And the Barn brack of course with contents that health and safety would never allow nowadays!
No trick or treating back then.
Any others?

We did those games(im mid 40s, west of ireland) and 1 with a 'hill' of flour and a grape on top, and we took turns to cut away flour with a knife. If your turn made the grape roll you had to try and pick it up off the flour in your teeth.
We did something that involved seeing who would get married but cant for the life of me remember what it was!

That was the Ring hidden in the brack @MILLYmo0se ! If you got it you were a cert to be married

@JaneJeffer I completely forgot about brack until just now, I wonder will there be any cheapies tomorrow? Love a bit of toasted brack with tons of butter 😋

JaneJeffer · 31/10/2023 23:13

Depends on whether all the sliced pan has been snapped up for Storm Ciarán and then there's a run on brack @DeireadhFomhair

I recommend making Odlums tea brack. It's very easy and tastes delicious. It also keeps well if you can hold off cutting into it (difficult!)

We used to go trick or treating and then come back and do all those games, great fun with our cousins, I remember also stuffing ourselves with brack just to see who'd get the ring! Good times

I was out last night with 2 DC trick or treating. I have to say it's heart warming that there are so many friendly faces answering the doors.

We live in the sticks so only get a couple of trick or treaters up our way.

We didn't get a brack either this year. I don't think I have even noticed them in the shops 🤔

I'm off work so have been out and about and some of the shops are in full christmas mode now.
