Shocked at the news this morning that he has been arrested for swindling people out of money by pretending to have cancer! Shocking! And from some of the comments on social media his sister is a conwoman too.

Some level of entitlement from him. You'd have thought he could have gotten a handy job in a bank or whatever because he was DJ. At least he's being held to account anyway.

Im surprised you havent heard of the Careys and this carry on before now tbh, particularly the sister. Dont think there has ever been anything concrete about him bar the bank debt write downs but many people would have claimed she easnt the only scammer in the family. Google her, loads of articles about her mortgage scam

I'm not a GAA head, i knew of DJ, but only from hurling. It sounds like the family are a bit mafiosi!

I honestly haven't, we're from up North but he's well know to be one of the best hurlers of all time. I'm away to google his sis now 🤥

There have been rumours circulating about him for a while...I'm no where near the loop but even I'd heard them! The sister was in the papers for the allegations against her. I was gutted to see someone I know named as having been conned by him, a really kind person, obviously completely taken in by this shit.

Was it ever clarified if she was the one that stole the money from his company? I remember at one point he was having the Gardai investigate her over it but when the mortgage scam surfaced that didnt seem to have gone anywhere.

I find it all very sad as he is one of the all time greats. Up there with Christy Ring. But I had a weird feeling about him a few years back when he broke up with his wife.

His hurling career was over and his new partner was a very wealthy woman. I remember some newspaper interview where he said his children fully supported him in his new life. To me these sounded like the words of someone having a classic mid life crisis.

There was a bit about some business venture with his new partner but I can't recall the details. Another sporting hero who couldn't adjust reality I guess ? Sorry for his family.

I’m surprised so many of you didn’t know about this, it’s been an open secret for a long time but it was in the news about 6 months ago when the allegations were reported without his name. All it took was a quick google to find out it was him.

I think he also managed to nearly destroy the life of his ex partner, the Dragon’s Den woman.

That was the cleaning business (think there were another couple of businesses under the company name. His first wife was a director then he appointed Sarah (i think is her name?) then there was all the missing money and things started to unravel re the mortgages on the K Club properties etc. The relationship ended shortly before the wedding date iirc

I know an old inter County footballer slightly. He told me how lucky he was to get a job as a brewery rep - many of his peer group had to emigrate to find work.

resurrecting this thread. I see he’s pleaded guilty .. what an awful man. I feel sorry for everyone that handed over money in good faith. Imagine there were probably people praying for him too! I hope they throw the book at him!

He deserves everything they throw at him, he conned vulnerable people out of their life savings. And that photo of the phone cable up his nose trying to make out he was that ill. Despicable.
