I'm presuming ye have all heard about the feck up with BOI and people getting money in their accounts that wasn't theirs or being able to transfer it to revolut.

I'm in a few SM groups 1 in particular is fairly funny or sad depending on what way you look at it with how people think it will pan out.

Anyone that tries to give advice that you cannot keep the money is being shot down as a 'begrudger' and just jealous. Then others saying 'sure I need the money that they can't have it back' 'little DC's birthday is this week it'd be cruel to take it back off me'

It was a royal f*ck up by BOI but you can't just keep the money. It's like getting the wrong change back in the shop but the shop have discovered their mistake just after giving you the change, they spotted an extra €10 lets say stuck to one, of course they are going to ask for it back.

Bank of Ireland warns money withdrawn during IT blunder will be debited as online services restored

Bank of Ireland’s mobile app and 365 Online services have been restored after a massive technology breakdown allowed customers who have no money in their accounts to get access to funds.

Agree. Why do people think they are so entitled to money that was never theirs in the first place?

I think some are heading for a huge wake up call over the next few weeks. When their salary/wages/grant hit their account and it's swallowed up. It will also have a massive effect on their credit rating if they don't pay it back. Might not affect all but some will be impacted.

It reminds me of the 80s, when occasionally a pay phone malfunctioned and word got round, and there would a huge queue of people waiting to phone their cousins in the US or their best friend in Brisbane. Always terribly good-humoured, with people keeping to self-imposed time limits, handing the same coins on to one another and chatting in the queue in lashing rain about what Mairéad was getting up to in Buffalo.

A Garda friend in Limerick was laughing at how my city didn’t seem to have tried very hard to hit the ATMs in comparison.

It was ridiculously greedy of the people who did it and it is theft no matter how they justify it to themselves. The smug ones saying they will open an account elsewhere well good luck trying to close an account in overdraft cos it cannot be done and the overdraft fees are eye watering. I have no sympathy. The rest of us with boi just waited till the app was working again like honest people.

By the sound of it some of them have gone and spent the lot too.

Really bad from BOI though what happened there.

Ignoring the mess up, on a practical basis is it not just textbook theft by those taking the extra money? As you are dishonestly taking something you know isn't yours?

As Judge Judy says, you need to come to court with clean hands!

Personally, I wouldn't have done it. But I understand there may be some others out there who may have thought the windfall was genuine and spent it. Others who did it on a whim only have themselves to blame if they knew it was an error and will just have to face the consequences.

I dont know why people bother to tell them 'you cant keep it/the bank will taje it' tbh. If you are the kind of person that purposely went to take money you knew wasnt yours you arent going to listen to the fact it ll be taken back, and if they dont understand how banking works well they ll soon find out wont they

MILLYmo0se · 18/08/2023 07:18

'banks will take it'

Mamette · 18/08/2023 07:23

I just think it’s mad that people thought it would be ok to take it in the first place, and that they’d be fine to keep it because BOI made a mistake!?

Like if there was wads of cash left out on the bank counter inside the bank by accident, and eveyone went in and took them, but also left all their details, name, account number and time of transaction etc in a neat little log book beside it, that would be fine ans you wouldn’t expect to be chased to give it back? Come on!

AuntieJoyce · 18/08/2023 07:28

It just reflects how little people know about how money, banking and finance works I think.

I just think imagine how mortified you'd be to be videoed in the queues trying to get the money out. Everyone would be able to see that you're desperate and thieving. There's a video of the queue in Navan online. I hope BOI get the money back off all of them. Fools.

The video I watched (not sure where it was) half of them were in their PJs so not sure how morto they'd be.

They'll all be denied mortgages from BOI so it's pretty short term thinking
