Just wondering if anyone else is currently following the ongoings between one Mr E Burke and his contempt of court issue?

Yes, he is one of 'those' Burkes...

Telling a child that he/she can change sex or be neither sex or combination of sexes is cruel.

Using incorrect pronouns for one child is disrespectful to all the other children in the class. It’s buying into an ideology that is bully on lies.

people can believe whatever they want about themselves. They can’t compel other to go along with their beliefs.

There’s a big world out there full of people who will use the correct pronouns for this child. If this is upsetting for the child I’d suggest helping the child to deal with reality.

To be clear I do not admire his carry-on in the courts. It is nothing short of disgraceful.

I'm still not convinced that he had to have any interaction that the student would have been aware of if it had been handled differently by the school and therefore without the media circus. His refusal to use the pronouns did not have come to the student's attention. But that ship has clearly sailed!

So are we saying that he had no interaction with the students but he refused to use the pronouns/new name when discussing the student with other teachers?

My favourite bit was this gem:

As far as I understand, that is it. And then got shirty with the principal when they tried to discuss it with him.

Pronouns are rarely used in the presence of the person being referred to so it is reasonable to assume that's the case. He didn't teach the child so really had no reason to be discussing the child anyway. The Principal instructed all staff to use a new name and pronouns. He said he couldn't. I don't know why she didn't just say, "Fine, it isn't relevant to you as you've no need to discuss the student anyway" and close it down. Now maybe he would have still pushed the issue on principle. There isn't much evidence of him being reasonable and looking for a way forward.

A family on the spectrum I'd guess.

I thought it came to the attention of a large section of the school community when he stood up in the middle of a religous service to demand (as he had done in at least one meeting already) that the principal withdraw her email? I dont see how her saying oh well it wont actually affect/apply to you anyone would have helped, if that approach but have placated him surely from the start he would have just disagreed in his own mind about it and not be insisting the entire thing be dropped school wide.

I don't think they're a family on the spectrum, I do think they're very insular and a bit cultist in their behaviours.

3timeslucky · 01/04/2023 11:15

@MILLYmo0se The first time it was raised was at a meeting with staff. That's when it should have been dealt with. They were all instructed to use a new name and pronouns. He wasn't satisfied with that direction and raised it at the event. So if dealt with at the staff meeting he'd have had no reason to raise it at a school event.

Dealt with as in his way was deemed the correct way? Because it certainly comes across as that is the only course of action he would accept

Is it true that the school acted without the permission of the parents?

A lot of people are that way I suppose.
Especially the transactivists

The parents werent aware it was their child, Im not sure if its that they didnt know their child was requesting different pronouns in school or they knew this but not that a teacher was objecting to it

And they should all be dealt with under the appropriate disciplinary and legal process in my opinion, makes no difference which side of the arguement they are on, people cannot behave in that belligerent fashion in the workplace

Latest update in relation to the ongoing saga of Enoch Burke and his issues :-
https://www.thejournal.ie/enoch-burke-pay-legal-costs-wilsons-hospital-school-6121298-Jul2023/

He has to pay legals costs to the school as they were successful in their High Court action against him earlier this year.

When will enough be enough for the Burke family????

Enoch Burke ordered to pay legal costs to school that suspended him

In May, Justice Owens found that Burke was lawfully suspended from his teaching position at the school.
