Talk to me about communions

DD's first communion is in April. I'm not from Ireland so have no idea what the done thing is.
I am assuming the white fancy communion dress is a requisite (thinking of looking on Done Deal or adverts.ie, as money is tight and I don't fancy spending hundreds of euro on something that will only be worn for a couple of hours, but any suggestions as to where to get outfit under €200 greatly appreciated). does she need long sleeves or a cover up for church, and a veil?
What about the party? What does this "normally" look like? Do people expect food and drink laid on? Child entertainment? (DSIL had a very elaborate party for DN including venue hire, caterers, magician, kid disco, slushie machines. popcorn machine, child entertainers, a dress worth €800 for ceremony and multiple outfit changes during the day,... but she generally pushes the boat out on these things so I don't know if it usual/expected or more elaborate than most.

Anything goes really, people with big families usually have something at house as easier people can come and go during the day.
Ask child what they would like for day. One mine wanted pizza & cinema other wanted bouncy castle but they book out fast here so I got for a different day.
The official dress shops super expensive. I think people often pass dresses onto friends, cousins the Dunnes dresses are really nice and Monsoon online have sales often.
