Irish census - CSO advise trans to select male AND female sex

thecountess.ie/census-campaign/

In an unprecedented departure from the historical method of counting how many males and females are in the State on the night of April 3rd, 2022, the CSO has advised trans identified people to select BOTH Male and Female on their forms. The CSO will then randomly assign their sex. This is not a viable solution because it will skew the data collected for the sex category, which is primary, after one’s name. In a joint campaign by four Irish women’s groups, we are asking those who believe that biology and gender identity should be two separate categories, to legally register their protest to the problem of gender interfering with the primacy of sex, by entering “Believer in Biology” for Question 12: “What is your religion, if any?” Just tick option 7, “Other”, and write Believer in Biology in the space provided.

This is quite concerning to me as in order to plan services etc. accurate data is required. If they feel it is important to know numbers of trans people, then ask the question. This is a disservice to both trans people who may need specific services and to people who either don't have a gender identity or whose gender identity matches their sex who need services aligned with their sex.

I don't understand what you mean re making sure trans people get access to services they need.
Do you you mean making sure people get access to services as required by sex? Such as smears for females, prostate check for males?

As long as people register their sex I don't see the issue, gender isn't really important is it when looking at medical need?

OchonAgusOchonOh · 21/03/2022 00:06

They are telling trans people to tick both male and female and they will randomly assign a sex to them. Depending on the numbers who do so, it will result in distorted and inaccurate data regarding numbers of each sex.

Regarding services for trans people, I don't know what specifically may be required but I assume when someone is transitioning they need access to counselling and other services to support their transition. Knowing how many require these services would require an accurate recording of numbers rather than random allocation to one or other sex

It also creates issues in terms of provision of sex based services such as smears and prostate checks if sex is randomly assigned by the CSO rather than them recording an accurate account of number of each sex.

Surely that's on the person completing the survey to tick only the box that marks their actual sex, not what they have chosen as their gender identity?

OchonAgusOchonOh · 21/03/2022 10:18

You would think wouldn't you? There is a legal obligation to complete it accurately so for the CSO to be advising trans people to effectively "spoil their vote" and for the CSO to then make up the data is insane.

The Countess is advocating ticking the other option under religion and writing in "Believer in Biology"

Is there an option for Jedi ?

OchonAgusOchonOh · 22/03/2022 22:06

It's always been an option to put Jedi😁

Terrible article on Lia Thomas today in the Irish times . No threat to female swimmers at all apparently. Do they think we are stupid? Twitter doesn't agree

Bumping this for census night.

Anyone who disagrees with the CSO telling people to choose both male and female if they don't feel comfortable choosing one is advised by the countess (thecountess.ie/census-campaign/) to tick the "Other" option under Religion and write in "Believer in Biology".

Falsifying data, which is what the CSO are advocating, makes it impossible to plan for our future needs.

This Census won't be much help to historians of the future.Confused One of my friends wrote ' I believe in biology ' for religion. I bottled out! But I don't blame her. If you can't define a woman , you can't defend a woman.

Do you mind me asking - why did you bottle out? Nobody would know what you wrote until the census is released in 100 years. I wrote believer in Biology and put some stuff about why I believe it is an issue in the time capsule section.

I'm not sure really. Where forms are concerned I'm a bit obsessive. This week I filled one in for a Smartpass. There weren't enough boxes for my existing travel pass number and the lady said ' never mind just write 2 numbers in the last box'. This felt like a mortal sin 😆. Anyway I assuaged my census guilt by making a rage donation to some feminist cause.
