Decision on masks for primary in Ireland?

Hi all, we're in Cork! Just keeping an eye on the news today that they may be deciding on whether children in primary will have to wear masks. Just wanting to see how everyone feels about it? I will personally feel really sad if it comes to this, they've been affected so much already and wearing a mask for 5 odd hours will be uncomfortable and block all facial expressions between each other 😕

Re. Vaccines for children. I'm Irish living in Mexico and Mexico's Minister of Health, who is also an eminent immunologist, spoke out against the vaccination of healthy children.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 25/11/2021 22:43

@Abitlost2 - this is whats been on loop for two years..

Because the science backs it up. Unfortunately, many people are not complying.

Radyward · 25/11/2021 22:45

This roll over and take any restriction from nphet is a joke. I mean is their any independent thought !!! We arent allowed now to think for ourselves or even have our kids best interests at heart..
Im fuming at the media #rtecovidcrazy
.no questioning. I mean seriously every night tv3 with their covid update
Please move on - please its covid fatigue. I am not a sinn fein fan at all BUT at this stage i mean i cannot bring myself to vote in any of the present govt after this
.like anyone but them in next.

I feel like screaming. Tony lauded as the daddy of the nation finger wagging at the public early on in this pandemic
Like seriously who writes this drivel !!
Like the media have done such a goid job of frightening us into the vac / frightening us into restructions that the vaccinated are still terrified. Old people fully vaccinated in their homes terrified by the media and govt
Its just so awful. Not 1 word about mental health of adults or kids. Awful awful times which is relentless and seems here forever

HiGunny · 25/11/2021 22:45

I'm really angry about this move from NPHET. All along they've been saying that transmission is low in schools and that kids that are positive are catching it from their families. So why the need for masks in school then???

I'm also not comfortable with under 12s being vaccinated. I'm happy to be vaccinated myself as the benefits outweigh any risks, but children don't get seriously ill from Covid. I have no doubt though that after Christmas children won't be allowed into play centres, cinemas etc without a vaccine cert.

IrishMamaMia · 25/11/2021 22:45

What is going on in Ireland? I'm Irish in the UK and visited Ireland and Germany in the summer. Nowhere else seems to be adopting the crazy attitude to Covid that Ireland is?!
So in Ireland, antigen tests = not okay, but masks for 9years plus =okay?! And that's just in Ireland Hmm
If you're bothered by this rule, and thinnk your child would be too, get your child made exempt, I would for sure.

IrishMamaMia · 25/11/2021 22:48

'All along they've been saying that transmission is low in schools and that kids that are positive are catching it from their families. So why the need for masks in school then???'

@HiGunny oh my god yes they just make it up as they go along. GAA and all socialising around it is fine 😂😂
Are softplays still closed in Ireland? Literally ridiculous.

Radyward · 25/11/2021 22:48

An ffp3 medical grade mask stops transmission - nothing else.

IrishMamaMia · 25/11/2021 22:49

Apparently so but Germany has compulsory use of ffp3 and they have had hella lot of cases recently.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 25/11/2021 22:50

@Puppalicious - you are referring to studies about adults as if you can just extrapolate the results to children.

I was responding to the statement and actally the vaccinated can transmit is as the same viral load as unvccinated.. As children have not been vaccinated in sufficient numbers for these studies to have been conducted yet, I assumed the poster was referring to adult transmission. I am not am ummunologist so can't speculate on transmission in children.

Grinchtastic · 25/11/2021 22:54

OchonAgusOchonOh

Can you or someone else point me to evidence that show that masks significantly reduce transmission?

And not the Bangladesh RCT one, which has been so roundly criticised this week after it was revealed to be deeply flawed once the data and workings were released.

Abitlost2 · 25/11/2021 22:57

@OchonAgusOchonOh you must be in a different country with " many of not complying", masks in classrooms will be a drop in the ocean with this virus. Also how long do you expect people to stop living normally? Forever? It's not going away , it'll continue to spread, slow down a bit, spread again...

OchonAgusOchonOh · 25/11/2021 23:00

@Grinchtastic - there are multiple studies our there. I suggest Google scholar to find reputable ones.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 25/11/2021 23:02

@Abitlost2 - you must be in a different country with " many of not complying"

No. I'm in Ireland. Loads of people wearing masks below their nose or just really loose so not effective. Loads of people not socially distancing.

SuperDuperC · 25/11/2021 23:05

I don't agree, I see the majority complying but if you think that 8 year olds will wear a mask properly when grown adults you've seen can't then...🤯

It's rampant and all i see are people dilligently wearing masks everywhere. It was an immunolgist on the radio last week that said although the vaccine helps prevent death or serious complications vaccinated people can transmit it as easily and at the same viral load as unvaccinated. Which obviously seems to be the case right now! Also would love if there was the same energy put into lowering rates of obesity in this country which causes huge strain on the hse all the time..

Abitlost2 · 25/11/2021 23:09

People have been and are hugely compliant in this country @OchonAgusOchonOh

Radyward · 25/11/2021 23:09

Not social distancing !!!!- my god its only been 2 yrs / 5yrs /ten yrs and so on. Humans need human contact. We were all led to believe the vaccine was a path to normality now its a booster andnow its blame the kids . Nphet should all resign.look at england gettin on with life .was in leeds 4 weeks ago and my god,it felt and was normal. Lucky them

Puppalicious · 25/11/2021 23:10

Yes, the logic seems a bit off - “loads of adults wear a mask so badly it’s useless - let’s make the kids do so too! For 6 hours!”

OchonAgusOchonOh · 25/11/2021 23:12

@Abitlost2 - People have been and are hugely compliant in this country

Compliance is quite half-hearted. As I said, lots of people with masks worn incorrectly, either too loose or below their nose. Very few socially distancing any more. It may be different in the part of the country you live in, but that is what I am experiencing.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 25/11/2021 23:14

@Radyward - Not social distancing !!!!- my god its only been 2 yrs / 5yrs /ten yrs and so on. Humans need human contact.

I need human contact with my loved ones, not with the gobshite behind me in the queue who insists on standing at my heels.

Abitlost2 · 25/11/2021 23:14

So when all the kids are masked up and vaccinated and it overwhelms the health system next winter which it will what then?? I wont be getting my kids vaccinated. The masks wont slow it down much , the seasons will and it'll be back with a vengance next year. I have relatives working in hospitals in the UK and they think its bonkers over here also @Radyward

Radyward · 25/11/2021 23:17

We need to tolerate some deaths. Every single medical book needs to be updated to include this new disease covid and how to handle it. The survival rate is 99.4%. I mean what more odds do people want !! the govt are completely at 6s and 7s .its a joke. There is no living with covid. Just get the booster and your chances of serious illness is very small and kindly move along there love.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 25/11/2021 23:22

@Abitlost2 - vaccinated people can transmit it as easily and at the same viral load as unvaccinated.

Yes they can. However, the period of time for which they transmit is reduced so overall, vaccinated infect fewer than unvaccinated.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 25/11/2021 23:23

@Abitlost2 - So when all the kids are masked up and vaccinated and it overwhelms the health system next winter which it will what then??

Historically, pandemics generally take around 4 years to die out.

Radyward · 26/11/2021 07:50

Im infuriated. Like mow the eu say the vaccine only valid for 9 months.surely it will be a sort of bkackmail
Vaccinate your children and restrictions may ease. Blah blah. Tony Holohan is destroying my kids childhood. Another variant like seriously ' its to keep us queuring up. Soon we wont be able to tnink forourselves oh wait thats happening right now
