Haha Dustin! Grin

Arkla Arkla Arkla Co. Wicklow 🎵

That's going to be stuck in my head for days now

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/02/2021 15:21

A little taste of home!

Triphazards · 03/02/2021 16:28

I've been accused of sounding like the late Rev Dr Ian Paisley and I've never even lived anywhere in Ireland.

I'm not saying he wasn't a lovely speaker or anything, obviously.

WhatWouldZenoDo · 03/02/2021 16:39

Ouch! That's a funny one.

Jenasaurus · 03/02/2021 16:39

Out of interest what accent would you say Pierce Morgan has?

WhatWouldZenoDo · 03/02/2021 16:40

I listened to ross o'carroll kelly "Brayside" on audible and the narrator did the arklow accent justice 😂😂

WagnerTheWehrWolf · 03/02/2021 16:40

Oh wow, you must have some hellfire and brimstone boom to your voice, @Triphazards? Grin

English! RP
WagnerTheWehrWolf · 03/02/2021 16:42

I would say Piers Morgan has a well to do/middle class, SE English accent.

WagnerTheWehrWolf · 03/02/2021 16:43

Not RP though

WhatWouldZenoDo · 03/02/2021 16:44

@WagnerTheWehrWolf

I'd love to hear a 'howiya' accent right now. Has been so long since I've been home!
I recommend Brayside. It is hilarious. Obviously it revolves around school rugby teams but Sharton and Ronan and Sharton's parents have accents the narrator do3s perfectly. It was a funny book that had to be listened to. Only one character from arklow thankfully!
Inextremis · 03/02/2021 16:47

I have a wandering accent. Born in London to very London-accented parents, lived in Kent until I was 4, then Northumberland until 10 - where I picked up a Geordie twang, then down to the south east, where the Geordie twang was disapproved of and squished, then (after 3 years in Huddersfield) moved to the west of Ireland, where I've been for 20 years - and what started as a parody of the local accent has stuck in some places. so I now say 'care' when I mean 'car'. I tend to unconsciously reflect people;s accents back at them, not having a fixed one of my own!

WhatWouldZenoDo · 03/02/2021 16:50

Rebecca Rabbit has estuary english and that does not sound nice to my ear.

Piers morgan's accent does sound nice (to me)

magicstar1 · 03/02/2021 16:56

You mean you have a couple of Howayas Grin

CherryValanc · 03/02/2021 17:00

Isn't estuary English the one that is like RP but not as clipped or fake?

I certainly didn't mean Essex or cockney by it.

Have I been telling myself false information all my life!!!! 😮

Weatherwarning · 03/02/2021 17:00

@Shopgirl1

My kids have south side Dublin accents, not American sounding though. I hate it. I’m Irish, but from Munster. Worse again, they support the Dubs!
This. I think the supporting the Dubs is the hardest part Wink
CherryValanc · 03/02/2021 17:00

*fake sounding

HarrietM87 · 03/02/2021 17:07

My son is only 2 and speaks in my Irish accent despite living in London. I’ll be so sad when he inevitably loses it when he starts nursery! Would love him to have a Dublin accent!

WhatWouldZenoDo · 03/02/2021 18:12

My perception of estuary is that it's that accent with the long drawn out vowels. RP has "quicker" vowel sounds. I dont know how to describe this!!

ButwhereisMYcoffee · 03/02/2021 18:14

Isn’t it literally ‘estuary of the Thames’.

WhatWouldZenoDo · 03/02/2021 18:15

Ok.. holly willoughby - RP?
Zoe Ball - tiny bit estuary. That is a bit unfair to her but cant think of better examples.

This is how I understand it.

ButwhereisMYcoffee · 03/02/2021 18:15

Or is it ME who has been WRONG all my life?

Also surely if you speak like the queen you have an extraordinarily strong southern English accent?

ButwhereisMYcoffee · 03/02/2021 18:19

Radio 4 Today show is what I think of as RP.

WagnerTheWehrWolf · 03/02/2021 18:21

Holly Willoughby doesn't have an RP accent.

Think David Attenborough. That very clipped and cut glass BBC voice of decades ago.
