My ancestors are listed on the England and Wales censuses as coming from “Ballymaine, Ireland”. Does anyone have any idea where this place might be? I can’t find it on any maps.

I always thought the Irish part of my family came from County Cork, but one cousin is listed on one of the censuses as coming from Cavan - so something must be wrong.

All suggestions very gratefully received. I’ve been puzzling over this for 15 years... Thank you!

I think there’s a place called that In Donegal

Wow Sharpkat perhaps we’re related! Clifford is not a big place - chances are my grandfather will have known yours (I might even recognise the name?). It did have a very large Irish population though who came over in the 19th century to work in the mills.

Hmmm...it could be Ballymaine couldn’t it. The last letter on the census looks odd to me - not like the census-taker’s other “e”s. That’s something else to think about.

None of these places are near Cork though!

Thanks very much for the townlands link SonetLumiere - I will go through them.

Or maybe there isn't one in Mayo Blush It does come up as an address of a courier company but not sure it exists.

Catabogus · 19/02/2020 20:58

Yes I found the courier company too! Glad it’s not just me.

@Drum2018 still working on that! my Grandads extended family were from Ballina but he grew up near Foxford. He moved over here (England) in 1946 with my Granny who was from Belfast. I don’t know much about that side of the family, he died before I was born. I have some family around Foxford still and some in Kiltimargh though.

Actually if you don’t mind me piggybacking on the thread Catabogus, has anyone got any ideas what Agnes’ maiden name is from this document? I know her married name but cannot work out what her maiden name says. I don’t think I even have a starting place.

Does anyone know a place called (something like) Ballymaine?
PorpentinaScamander · 20/02/2020 12:28

Was going to suggest Ballymena for the Irish town but see it can't be.

Is Agnes' maiden name Murrell?

purplecorkheart · 20/02/2020 12:31

Ballymaloe?

FadedRed · 20/02/2020 12:33

Murrell? Munnell? Certainly starts with ‘M’ and ends with a double ‘l’ .

PhilipJennings · 20/02/2020 12:33

Looks like Agnes Munnelly to me. Munnelly is a fairly common name in the west of Ireland.

KatyaZamolodchikova · 20/02/2020 12:45

Thanks all. I’ll try and check all of those options! West of Ireland is definitely right geographically so I’ll give that a go! Thanks & sorry for highjacking the thread!
