Building extension to family home - tell me your tales!

Hello.
DH and I are thinking about moving back to my home town in a few years. One idea we have thrown about is to extend my family home (mum lives alone) to create 2 separate houses, joined by a walkway/shared space. We would renovate the old house, mum would have the newer build. Mum is keen on the idea.

So I am open to any advice, feedback, words of warning.

We haven't done ANYTHING yet, so not sure if we'd even be allowed, in relation to planning permission.

Has anyone done anything similar?

Obviously it depends on what we want as an end result, but budget wise, what are we looking at? I realise that is a "how long is a piece of string" question, but do we have to have at least (e.g.) 30k/50k/100k for it anyway?

Legally, we'd get solicitor to make sure us investing in house would be documented correctly, and that both us and mum are protected.

Check with your County Council first. A lot of information is on line. You will need planning permission and there may also be tax implications.

As for cost, all new builds have to be built to certain building standards, minimum A3.

There was a Room to Improve episode where they did this - couldn't tell you what season. Maybe 3/4 years ago. End result seemed lovely with mother having a new house 'within the old house' - and couple in the main part of house. There was a doorway between them which they both said would be kept closed! They were in the midlands I think.

I came on to say there was a room to improve episode about this too, beaten to it by pp☺
