how to buy a mattress for a cot with curved ends

Help!
Got a cot handed down from family and need to buy a mattress for it, however when I went to measure it I noticed that the ends are curved i.e. it is not rectangular. So the length along the edges is shorter than the length if you measure it along the middle. But mattresses all seem to be rectangular.
Problem - if I buy a mattress to fit within the cot (i.e. measure along the edges) there will be a curved-shape gap at either end - does this matter?
They recommend a gap no bigger than 4cm but is this rule only for the sides, or does the same rule apply to the ends as well as the sides? The gap would be 7cm at its widest point in the middle but a curved shape, (like an orange segment?) so there wouldn't be the gap all the way along.
(I know I could get a custom made odd shaped mattress made to order but that is so expensive it would be cheaper just to buy a new cot instead.)
What should I do?

Are you sure custom made would be too expensive?
I wouldn't want that gap tbh.

John lewis make to fit - no more expensively than buying a new mattress iirc. I cut a template out of newspaper and took it with me to order.

I think that kind of gap would potentially be unsafe. And definitely uncomfortable. Babies wiggle around in their cot, my DS has ended up head wedged into the top corner every night since he was about 4 months old. If there was a gap like the one you describe he'd end up with his head or arm stuck in it!

I had a mattress custom made, it really wasn't expensive, about £60 I think?

If you know what brand it is, baby mattresses online are very reasonable. I have used them a few times and the quality is good.

babymattressesonline will make a mattress to your size and shape and they are not expensive

I wouldn't risk going for one not perfect fit, if like me would drive me mad for years!
