Cots and beds

This topic is for discussing cots and beds. We've spent weeks researching and testing newborn beds in real homes with real families.

Can you use a moses basket in place of a cot for the first few months?

Can you?

We're currently in a 1 bed flat and we've been given a beautiful french style (so not a basket) moses basket which fits nicely in the new baby-adapted layout for the bedroom. We'd have to remove a chest of drawers to fit a cot and although we are planning on building storage in the hallway, we haven't the money to do it immediately.

If it is suitable, would I need to get a specially made mattress for it (I assume it is not a standard size), and where would I be able to order one from?

Thank you!

Yes, we used a 2nd hand carry cot with mattress in for the first few weeks - they mostly prefer the smaller sleeping spaces anyway. Less scary for them.

Lovely - thanks. Am gonna cross post this on the pregnancy forum actually (it's busier!) to see if anyone has any ideas about custom mattresses.
